    What about the Captains Courageous, or Cap Huff. He wasn’t a captain either. His given name was Saved from Captivity Huff.

    He’s still Cap’n Crunch. Though the article say’s he should be a Commander, his uniform looks historic, US Civil War three stripes on the sleeve was a Lt.. But it’s been suggested his hat could suggest he’s French so the regs of the French navy could historically be different. Also, the commanding officer of a boat or ship has typically been referred to as the captain of the ship even if they hold a rank below captain. Look at the Lt Commander William Outerbridge’s after action report for the events of December 7, 1941, it states the Officer-of-the-Deck called the captain of the USS Ward to the bridge at 0637. The captain was Lt. Commander Outerbridge. So Cap’n Crunch can be of a lower rank but his ship is not considered large enough to warrant a full captain to commander her. By tradition he’d still be called a captain.
