    Wasn’t she a blonde?

She’s so generic she can change hair colour whenever she needs.

The Legion of Superheroes had a good mix of male and female characters. Granted, except when Supergirl joined them, few of them had particularly great powers.
Haven’t read comics in decades, so I don’t know what it’s like now.

I would rather have Phantom Girls power over Bouncing Boys. I think Saturn Girl has a beter power set than Matereater Lad.

Everybody had a better power than Matter Eater Lad. He should have been in the Legion of Substitute Heroes.
Except for Supergirl(who was seldom involved,) most of the destructive powers belonged to the male characters.

She can also be the Star Trek character that gets to wear the red uniform. R.I.P

She’ll switch over to being a blonde later on (8 or 9 months from now). She’s brunette in these early appearances.

Marvel has plenty of female characters with destructive abilities. Think Rogue (the comic book version, not the movie version)
    Polaris, Deathbird, Electra, Dark Phoenix.
And then there is Elsie-Dee, the five year old little girl android detonation device.

I think Matter-Eater Lad was there to play the role of the unlikely hero who just needs a chance to prove himself.
