ok, it’s late, I’ll admit I’m not up to fighting form at the moment, but I really don’t get this one. The kids are in the back seat, getting rather loud. The car stops, the kids get out and another child gets in. He’s chattering away and a purple octopus wraps his tentacles around the kid and dad. Dad has a horrified expression then the ‘real’ kids are back, still loud and dad is happy. Can someone enlighten me on panels 3, 4, and 5? Who’s the mystery kid and why the octopus?
Thanks.

the mystery kid is Lio by Mark Tatulli ( http://www.gocomics.com/lio ). Lio is what Calvin would have been if he was a mute.
and that is a squid (one of Lio’s pets)

I love crossovers! (even though this strip is usually pretty lame, today’s is great!) Lio has the “Family Circus” kids today … is it some sort of special occasion in Comic Land?

They do that upon occasion, myhaircut. Usually without much planning, too.

The squid’s name is Ishmal.

Look closer cymbol. The dad is imagining the alternative with a kid who doesn’t talk at all, (Lio is a pantomime strip). Then realizes he’s perfectly happy with the chattering kids…

If I had his kids, I would trade for Lio.

mamarose, I know they do them from time to time, but usually when there’s two different comics doing them on a given day it seems like there’s something going on, like April Fool’s Day. I just wondered if there was a special occasion of which I was unaware.

@ Ji2m - I’m always struck by the intelligence it takes to get some cartoons. Yuo are absolutely right about this one, but it takes a number of steps to get the joke for some.
