I have a few that killed people. Not just regular war either, but coldblooded murder. One was a pirate, one shot a couple of British soldiers in the back, in Ireland, so they deserved it. Another sold bodies to medical schools, improvised a couple of times when he couldn’t dig any up…

And some bookies, bootleggers, a conman…..

There was also a lawyer, but we try to avoid talking about him.

I didn’t have that much luck looking up people in my family…All I got was more of what I already knew…

If you can find a connection to royalty – not that hard, just maybe 8-10 generations back – you’ll find that you’re related to the likes of El Cid, Lady Godiva (yes, she really lived), Old King Cole (King Coel, 1st-2nd centuries), Charlemagne, and all the way back to Shem and Japheth, and maybe even Ham, with most of the links back to them.

Many of my ancestors came over to get away from the law and tried to leave as little trace as possible. Even so, there are plenty about whom we know more than we wish. People who think there are any they are not related to have never considered how hard it is to know all your relatives just ten generations back.
2 – 1 generation back, your two parents
4 – 2 generations back, your four grand parents
    8 – 3
    16 – 4
    32 – 5
    64 – 6
    128 – 7
    256 – 8
    512 – 9
1024 – 10th generation back, hard to account for all of those
Go back another generation and you are pushing over a million ancestors simply in that generation, not counting incest, and it would be hard for them to know they weren’t kin so you can expect a little .

In fact, you don’t get all that far back until you have more ancestors in that generation than there were people on earth.

We’re all related somehow – which is a concept some people never grasp.

The British soldiers were most likely in Northern Ireland, British territory. How could anyone be proud of the terrorist who shot them in the back?

Considering Herman’s relationship with his wife, when he said that last line I can imagine him adding, " … either." , meaning her. :p

During the famine. Caused by blight, made even worse by the British. He got away with it, made it to America.

I had a great-great uncle who built his own boat to escape Ireland and sailed to Florida. He brought his sister with him
Sarah Frances Belinda Murphy married Frank Green.
One thing led to another and here I am.
(He was always mad at the Catholics rather than the British, I never learned why although I did learn later that Ireland was conquered by the British as a favor to some silly archbishop or other who wanted to force them to be Catholic rather than Christian. It’s a long time to bear a grudge, even if he were Irish, so I imagine it was something more recent, like misuse of altar boys or some such common thing.)
