No. No. I’m pretty sure that’s not it.

No, the real reason is that if too many people bicycled, there wouldn’t be anyone watching out for morons on bikes running stop signs. Then all the bikees would die off and we could spent road money on fixing the roads. And if we fixed the roads, people could watch out for idiots on bikes instead of potholes and the whole thing would start again.

“Morons on bikes running stop signs.” Yes, some cyclists do that. And so do some motorists. And when it comes to motorists and cyclists at a four way stop, motorists rarely give cyclists the right of way. I’ve seen cyclists accused of running the stop sign even after I watched them patiently wait their turn and have their right of way blocked.

Some bicyclists don’t seem to know that they are also subject to all traffic laws.

And then there are motorists who are out to get bicyclists just because they’re there.

david_42: I have two bad knees because of an idiot running a red light – at over 50 mph – in downtown Dallas. He was in a Chevy Caprice! (That is not a type of bicycle.)

I’ve seen a lot more bicyclists run stop signs and red lights than I have cars — a lot more; and I’ve been driving for almost 40 years.
