…which will do you precious little good in many areas – like certain regions in the Catskills! Having a cell phone is no substitute for hiking trail maps, a compass (and knowing how to use one) flares and planning.

But the SnR teams can’t home in on a compass.

Went on a trip with my folks to a place that didn’t have television, internet, telephones or a signal for the cell phone. It was a good experience, one I wouldn’t mind repeating.

Cell phones are fine if there are microwave cell towers to get the signal then propagate it through other towers.

In a cell-free zone they can’t zero in on a cell phone either – which is my point. We only finally got minimal cel service in my area of the Catskill Mountains two weeks ago – other areas still don’t have that much – especially in the Adirondacks. In areas like these a cell phone is absolutely useless
