Yes, believe it or not, the explorer was George W. Bush (1779-1863) – and he was African-American. His middle name was Washington – he was named after the general who later became the 1st president of the U.S., not the 43rd, whose middle name was Walker.

The stuff you learn reading the comics! I knew about Henson – he was from Baltimore – but had never heard of the others. Thanks, Stephen!

I’m a history geek and I know these facts, why are we not teaching this every day to all students in schools across America?I’ve had to teach these stories to my daughter myself. Black children and adults should take pride in their heritage and the important things their parents produced. The Tuskegee Airmen, the achievement of the north pole, the uses of the peanut, black soldiers service in all the american wars, I could go on.

I agree with every word. Everyday things we take for granted that were invented by Black Americans (and which you won’t learn about in school) include: the cell phone, the microwave, hinged mailbox, air conditioner, clothes dryer, fire escape, folding chair, pencil sharpener, stethoscope, the Super Soaker (yes, the water gun!), dust pan, telephone answering machine, spark plug, potato chips, curtain rod, fire extinguisher, and ironically, the golf tee. This is but a few of them.

Just look at the process for getting text books produced. There are all kinds of pressure groups, in Texas it is the white right wing calling the shots for the other 49 states.
