    Moses knew exactly where the Promised Land was; but, the Israelites had trouble following anyone since they had been slaves in Egypt for a long time. (The Israelites, aka the descents of Jacob, had been in Egypt for 400 years.)

    Even Joshua, who eventually led the remaining Israelites to the country of Canaan (aka the Promised Land), knew exactly where Canaan was. He had gone with Caleb to scout out the land during the early part of being in the Wilderness of the Sinai.
