    Coming soon, laws against that.

    With some of the new, recently developed technologies, electricity will soon be too cheap to meter. All cars will be electric, and there will be no need for fossil fuels, in fact, all those who own oil wells had better get pumping, since all their unsold oil will soon be worthless.

    The new electric cars will run with synchronous motors, so all will go the exact same speed and we’ll be able to pack cars much closer together and at much higher speeds with absolutely no risk of accidents. Since batteries do not yet have adequate capacity, we’ll use underground cables, accessible only by a special blade that’s part of the auto-mobile, a blade that will not only attach to the electric lines, but will also keep the cars from swerving and crashing. An app will tell the car where the ‘driver’ wants to go, and the car will do (almost all) the rest. It might be more convenient NOT to run the grid to each door, but allow cars to use batteries for the last mile or two, batteries charged by the cables under the highways, and with enough charge to go the last couple of miles to the doorway and then back to the electrified highway.

    And this is going to happen very soon. No later than 1970, and possibly even sooner.

    Nice!

    -

    But there are a few developments coming. Fusion. Autonomous driving (Google Car9. Induction cables in highways are an option. The world will change, leaving oil for more important things, like fertilizer. Oh, yeah, almost forgot: synthetic fuels (biofuels) as well.

    -

    These things take time. They go faster when there is pressure. Let’s wait for the next oil-war in the middle east, that will spur development again…

    As I said, fusion will definitely provide the entire world with electricity too cheap to meter before 1970. Every expert asked in 1950 unconditionally guaranteed it!

    (I prefer slots to induction cables—easier to build accident-proof highways with German speed limits.)

    @Overtaxed

    The article in Car & Driver is actually good reading. Range is the Achilles’ heel of pure electric cars. Obviously, the technology won’t improve because new gas powered cars are no better than the Model T.

    “Did you hear about the race between the Tesla and the new corvette where the tesla won?”

    Yeah, but can the Tesla beat a 1949 WIllys Overland going up a sand dune?
