    That kid will probably think texting his résumé will land him a job someday.

    I always wondered how the children aboard USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D (TNG, Captain Picard) would be schooled in basic things like reading and writing. I don’t think you can do a lot with computers at this stage, but i hope someone comes up with an experiment to prove or disprove this statement. The world is so complex now, if you could shave off a year from learning the basics it would be a boon to every child.

    I have found that a lot of kids now days do not know how to read an analog clock. They do not teach that in school any more.

    @Adrian Snare

    Texting is not slothful compared to actually making a phone call. It takes much more effort to text than call someone and talk.

    While conservatives denounce the teaching of critical thinking skills because they, “have the purpose of challenging the student’s fixed beliefs.”

    Actual Texas GOP platform.

    It’s pretty obvious there are some old farts here, who probably think it’s a disgrace that children no longer learn the proper use of a dip pen & inkwell.

    “I have found that a lot of kids now days do not know how to read an analog clock. They do not teach that in school any more.”

    I don’t remember spending time in class, learning to tell time and school was a loooong time ago. It is still taught in most schools, but not in an ongoing way. Nor should it be.

    I think this has more to do with fewer people having analog clocks in the home. What a 1st grader learns is soon forgotten if not practiced.

    DrC, we’ve had the technology for years. But we lack the will to fund schools with it. We’ve had them in the private companies I’ve worked for …more than 10 years now.

    I conducted a speaking class for over ten years, and it is
    appalling at the poor speech habits and lack of articulation many of our children demonstrate.

    And thinking about it I’m sure you can finish this sentence. “If it was good enough for Reagan (genuflect when you get to this part) to learn math with a slide rule….”
