The only time our hockey parents got near that bad was with a “homer ref” at an away game. The other team had a reputation for taking out the goalie, and getting away with it. Our goalie had taken off his helmet for some reason during a stoppage of play and the ref never bothered to look at him before dropping the puck. We all screamed and apparently embarrassed at his screw-up the ref threatened to throw us out. That was until the junior ref talked to him. Thank goodness for the courage of someone who hadn’t been corrupted by the “honer ref” syndrome yet.

I almost got our home team a bench penalty during one game also. The ref I yelled at had been officiating an amateur adult league where violence and dirty play are expected. I was the President of the small local youth hockey association, an assistant coach and was called upon to be time keeper during this particular game. After watching the same visiting team player, often near or right in front of the ref, “clothesline” our biggest player and take him up off his skates and never get a penalty, after at least three times I lost it. As President of the association my number one responsibility was to protect our players, in every age division, in every team not just mine. So at the end of the first period I asked the ref when he was going to start protecting the players and call penalties.for the egregious infractions. He told me to mind my own business and then went to the home bench and told the coach if I said one more word we’d get a bench penalty. After that I made sure that ref never officiated another game for our youth hockey league, or any youth hockey league in the area. Nothing and no one’s ego is worth a child getting injured due to a referee’s incompetence.

As a vindication of my objection in the second game of the a double header that day against the same team we had a the other ref from the first game and a new one to replace the idiot I yelled at. And the replacement ref, who became revered for his quality and fairness, ejected the offending player within the first five minutes of the game for the exact same conduct I complained about in the first game. And a sad reflection on youth sports, the offending player was encouraged by his mother and coached to play that way.
