All the homeless humans I run across don’t want food, they want money. Offer one a sandwich, and he’ll say “Aww c’mon man, can’tcha spare a coupl’a bucks?” One time a vagrant tried to sell me a hamburger he dug out of a dumpster.

Ooops. I didn’t give the kitty a piece of turkey today. (She had a teensy bite on Thanksgiving).
    .
I used to be against feral cats. Then I found out what they were eating. A county where I used to live had a 50% hantavirus rate amongst deer mice and lesser percentages of other mice. After that it was “gooooood kitty.” One even kept trying to move in with me. Be a LOT of sick people if those kitties were not on the prowl.
    .

Portland, Oregon stupidly got rid of it’s feral cats about 15 years ago. Then they had an explosion of Norway Rat and Black Rat. (The good ol’ disease carriers from Europe). For all the wheezing about cats and birds, unlike the UK, the cats here mainly go for rodents. Best thing people can do to/for the feral cats is to just leave them alone and let them do their job.

Homeless people make me feel bad. I went to Chicago yesterday and there were so many homeless people. Each were carrying cups and shaking’em. Few of them were disabled which made me feel really bad. Then there were the Salvation Army people… Actually when I was at Union Station I was at McDonald a homeless guy came up to me and asked me for few bucks. but I refused and felt bad. To be honest I try to avoid these people… Though am very interested in how they became homeless.

Keep garbage cleaned up and there aren’t going to be so many rats or mice. Feral cats carry disease too – ticks, fleas, rabies, a nasty brain parasite called Toxoplasma gondii that can cause miscarriage and mental retardation if a pregnant woman is infected. I’ve watched the local feral cats just stare at a mouse and go right back to stalking the birds.

The leftovers from one family really wont go all that far feeding the homeless population, but the stray cats here look pretty happy with what they got

    Good kids

Ferel is one thing. Homeless is another. Feral cats are made by other ferel cats. You aren’t going to get anywhere close to a ferel cat. Homeless cats are made by viscious people who move away leaving them or dump them in the country when they become inconvenient. They have appeared on my property, too well fed for it to be anything but dumped. Those now have a home forever.

right on Dr. Toon! I’m a tad tired of someone doing a good deed and being criticized for it, because it’s not what someone else thinks should have been done. If your upset about homeless humans you can help them, don’t tell others what to do.

A nice sentiment but not good for the cats.

Unfortunately, there are probably nearly as many reasons for being homeless as there are homeless people. Mostly, it involves some mental issues and/or substance abuse issues – which is why many want money, not food.

In a big city – I live in Toronto – there are also a number of fakes. Some may have heard of the “Shaky Lady” – she pretended some sort of palsy, but one day, a reporter followed her home to her very nicely appointed apartment, complete with wide screen TV.

That is why I do not give to panhandlers, but I give to the Salvation Army.

Thanks, I feel differently about feral cats now. Here is a news story that supports your view.
