Could be two switches that control the light: one near the bed and one near the door. Position depends on which one was switched on when the other was switched off and vice versa.

Maybe it’s a multi-way switch. Actually, I’m a little surprised that there’d be a wall switch for a lamp sitting on Heart’s bedside table.

I thought of the light switch as a metaphoric representation of turning on the light in her dream world, if that makes any sense. Maybe not.
