And you can get the same pleasure and sense of accomplishment with a window garden – try growing a couple of pots of sweet potatoes. Easy to grow, and lovely vines with heart-shaped leaves. Or try working with miniature roses. I once had a marvelous mini-garden on top of my dryer in a sunny corner of the kitchen. The plants liked the humidity.

My mother ended up doing something like this. She tended to her yard and flowers, plus she made some woman friends. One big factor in depression is that people need to be around people, or they will wither. Sometimes you will see people who are closet cases get depressed when the children are grown and they don’t get the chance to be around others of the same gender. If their partner is not a closet case they will flutter around them concerned and annoying the depressed person who would rather be around their own kind. The best cure in this small town is for that depressed closet case to get to the YMCA where he or she can involve themselves in deep, intense chats while exercising. It ain’t all about the exercise, baby.

The straight can be vulnerable to depression because of the segregation of the sexes. You typically don’t have boys and girls hanging out with each other – the parents tend to frown on that. What’s a straight man to do? The straight women get snapped up on the marriage market, often by dashing closet cases. The straight man is not going to get a lot of satisfaction from hanging with other dudes. In theory, a man always has his mother. But what if his mother is a closet case and hates males? What if there are no female relatives available for him? For this male it is time for drug therapy. Better living through drugs!

Think about this study — who is going to garden? NOT someone that is unhappy!

Most likely, people that are already happy and satisfied with life will garden. My first wife and I were happy for 17 years and we gardened a lot. She died and I was in grief for two years and was not able to garden. Got remarried 29 years ago Sept 15 and felt better and now my gardens are bigger than most peoples yards. You actually garden because you are happy – you do not get happy from gardening. If you are not happy you will not go gardening to try to get happy !
