    @J K

    Extremely off-topic, but I’m curious. I have seen ‘must of been’ instead of ‘must have been’ used quite often recently. Is that actually grammatically correct? I think not because it doesn’t make sense, but if I have learned anything about the English language it is that it doesn’t make much sense (especially for second language speakers) ;-). So, is this just a case of spoken language creeping into written language (’must’ve’ spoken fast could sound a bit like must of, I guess) or is this actually a legitimate use of ‘of’?

    Get a grip grammer nazi. People write here the way they talk, not the way they would write a paper for publication.

    Uhm, ok. That attack came out of the blue. What? I was actually asking a serious question because english is my second language and sometimes I still don’t get the nuances of it. I assumed JK would know because he used the expression. But thanks for clearing that up. O_o

    Welcome to the comments section, you will find that some people are extremely insecure and defensive about spelling and grammar. And many other things!
    I agree with you that “must of” is very probably a bastardization of the contraction “must’ve.” I wouldn’t expect to see that contraction in a formal setting, but as Ken points out, in conversational writing it is fairly common. “Must of” is an error, though.
    I wouldn’t have guessed that English was not your first language; you write very proficiently!
