Grand Avenue stars Kate Macfarlane, an avid sports fan who powerwalks to stay in shape. Not your typical cookie-baking granny, Grandma Kate has her hands full with her terrific twosome, who are best buddies even though their personalities clash. Gabby is an ambitious, newspaper-reading little girl who plans to become a billionaire before she's 30. Her brother Michael is a more sensitive soul who prefers riding his skateboard or performing scenes from Shakespeare to just about anything else.

Years ago I worked for a Pepsi distributor and was filling a machine in a teachers’ lounge at a junior high school.
I overheard two teachers making fun of a student. One of them was imitating his voice and they were laughing their heads off.
I always wondered what went on on the teachers’ lounge.

As a teacher, I often asked myself the same question. I also wondered why the Mimeograph was there too.

Teaching is a tough job at the elementary level. It’s work, work, work. My middle school math teachers had it easy though. One just slapped math problems on the blackboard with no concern about anyone understanding them, and no one did either. The other middle school math teacher I had didn’t do anything at all but chat with the disruptive students. It was depressing. The girl sitting in front of me got pregnant at 15. I thanked them all the time when learning remedial math in college.

Most schools I’ve been in lately have a number of teachers’ lounges. In at least one case there are several on each floor.
