Grand Avenue stars Kate Macfarlane, an avid sports fan who powerwalks to stay in shape. Not your typical cookie-baking granny, Grandma Kate has her hands full with her terrific twosome, who are best buddies even though their personalities clash. Gabby is an ambitious, newspaper-reading little girl who plans to become a billionaire before she's 30. Her brother Michael is a more sensitive soul who prefers riding his skateboard or performing scenes from Shakespeare to just about anything else.

Even teachers need an unexpected break.

It took a lot of snow for us to get a snow day in Illinois, but it did happen occasionally. Once though, a snow day was declared AFTER we had been dropped off at school. We had to wait for two hours outside before the bus driver was informed and drove back to get us.

Guess it depends on whether they get paid for the snow days.

I don’t remember having snow days when I went to school in Ohio in the 50’s and 60’s.

samfran60: We didn’t a decade before in north Texas, either, but we did have snow.

Elementary school teachers actually work hard, so yeah, he could use a much needed break. Too bad for him he didn’t get one of those cushy middle school jobs as a “reading specialist.” As a reading specialist the students would only see his back as he was leaving the room to let them read. He wouldn’t have to tell them anything. He would only have to expound his knowledge to reporters when they came calling.

My grandmother was a reading specialist, and she worked diligently with kids (and with adults who needed to learn to read) to help them. She changed people’s lives. Kids who thought they were stupid found out that they could learn after all.

Your grandmother was a real reading specialist, with a conscience too. My school was a mess. That reading specialist didn’t help anyone. I’m just saying it was particularly annoying to read how insightful and knowledgeable she was later in a news article.

As a matter of fact, I had a friend who couldn’t read at all, and it didn’t turn out well for him because of it.
