    It’s a play on the phrase “sing for your supper”, which came from musicians who were so poor that their ability to eat hinged on each night’s performance.
    []
    It’s also a play on the stereotypical joke about new wives being poor cooks, resulting in their burning the food or doing something similar due to inexperience.

    Thanks for the explanation. I didn’t get it either. I wasn’t recognizing the word singe. Too out of context for me, I guess.
