Why do the righties keep giving Reagan and Thatcher credit for what Michael Gorbachev and Boris Yeltsin did?

Amen brother Tear down this Wall was stated on June 12, 1987, it was done twenty nine months later on November 9, 1989 it was done.

So Newenglandah what is more powerful a man who takes down the wall or the man who says to do it and it is done? I am not being sarcastic, it is a honest question.

My side splits with laughter every time I see people try to attribute the fall of the Soviet Union to someone other than the Soviet Union itself.

Reagan and Thatcher had as much to do with the collapse of the Soviet Union as Santa Claus. However, the cost of the “military industrial complex” has done just as much damage to the U.S. as to the Soviet. (BTW, real “communism” works very well in small agriculturally based cultural units, but that isn’t “Marxism”, or dictatorships pretending to be “Communism”, on a much larger scale.)

it surprises me how many people know so little of thew collapse of ussr that they do not know that a major cause was reagan and thatcher stopped propping it up

Oh, yeah, sure. I thought that was all Reagan’s doing?

And we’re still trying to bankrupt our enemies, as we did the Soviets, by outspending the entire world combined in military hardware…

Why do lefties not want to give credit to people like Reagan, Thatcher, and Pope John Paul who did have quite a bit to do with the end of the Soviet Union? Though to be fair, the ‘righties’ are just as bad as the ‘lefties’ like you in ignoring any fact or bit of history that does not support their tunnel vision.

The Soviet Union fell because it’s economic policies were never realistic and from pressue both inside and outside the country. Thatcher was one of those pressures. So give the woman the credit she has due. I’m sure you’re more than willing to throw whatever blame she has coming her way.

Yeah, she did it all by herself. Forget about the decades of cold war that contributed to the downfall of the USSR

The Soviet Union was defeated by the policy of Containment. implemented by Truman.

Exactly. Reagan was one of the luckiest men alive. In the right place at the right time. His weapon was American money and shallow platitudes.
I would get so angry watching him play his Hollywood persona. He pretended to be selling ideals of Freedom to the world, but was continuing to sell the promise of American Affluence as has been done since the 1950s.
As Affluence wanned in economic downturns or when other countries attained it, sometimes without the basics of Freedom for their citizens, America lost its advantage.
