2025 is the year to look for. That’s the year entitlement spending and servicing the debt will consume the entirety of our budget. Radish, you may want to check your facts, but 20% of the budget (military spending) is less than 44% of the budget (medicare and SS). And that 44% is growing very quickly. But that’s right. Blame the conservatives for saying that there is a problem with entitlements.

“entitlements” exist that should never, ever been voted into law. Just because majority Democrat congresses and presidents invented the many “entitlements” does not give moral justification for Treasury giveaways….thereby emptying the public revenue/borrowing “funds” authorized by politicians buying Votes!
    -
radish, the US Military belongs to ALL AMERICANS and has the US Constitution’s first priority in public spending and is intended for Defense against all foreign enemies. I am in total agreement with the Tea Party movement to try to stop the Liberal/Democrat ruination of America. That ruination is in clear sight, as Wraithkin pointed out.

You don’t understand that “entitlements” are earned over a lifetime of working and paying into Social Security and Medicare.
Just as you expect your company to pay you for working all week, Your paycheck is an entitlement.
It is not ‘free’ money, you and those who work contributed into it.

The CEO’s went to see Obama about the US Credit Rating downgrade that is coming. The Free Riders do not care if the cost to borrow money doubles.
When the govt checks bounce, then someone will care.

Yes, please, do let us forget about the Obamaphone, since it’s figment of the right wing’s diseased imagination.

When are you leftists going to stop pointing this at the Republicans and understand that YOUR President has done nothing to avert disaster for four years. He is the most do nothing president since Carter.

They are called entitlements because people have come to believe they are entitled to them. On another note, there was an episode of Andy Griffith years ago where another child told Opey that Allowance meant that it was money the kid was allowed to have. Ended with the brat getting whipped by his dad but good. Seems to me that perhaps these entitlement people need a good @zz whoopin’ to straighten ’em out. Everyone knows that something has to give somewhere, Noone wants to be the ones doing the sacrificing. That is the problem today. Too much selfishness. ’Take care of me!!! Whole country can go to hell in a handbasket as long as I get mine!!!" Well a bill is coming due my friends. A day of reckoning of Biblical proportions if we continue on the way we are going.

This is another falicy. Social Security is not a savings plan. It is a pay as you go plan. With the older generation living off the backs of the younger. Problem with it is that people are living longer and longer. The elderly are starting to outnumber the younger. It is just a matter of time until the system rips itself apart.

    @lonecat

http://obamaphone.net // Not really, there is a program allowing low income families to receive a discount on phone service. This program has been tied to Obama in recent years more as an advertising ploy than anything else. Lifeline was instituted by Ronald Reagan and expanded by GW to include cell phone service coverage. This does not guarantee a free cell phone although there are some providers who are doing this for their Lifeline subscribers. The plan varies by carrier as well. The money to pay for this comes from a pool of money that the governement collects from all phone companies and they in turn pass along that cost to their customers in the form of a small monthly surcharge. The program is designed to provide emergency communications ability to all regardless of ability to pay for it. Just like any other program, the trouble comes because some people are exploiting it beyond its original intent. And that is truly the rub for all government programs. There will always be those unscrupulous individuals who you give an inch to who will just have to take that mile.

Yes, that’s my point, calling these Obamaphones is an ignorant or dishonest ploy. Since the program began under Reagan, it would make more sense to call them Reaganphones, but you won’t hear anyone on the right doing that. Of course there are poor people who game the system, but they cause a lot less trouble than the rich people who game the system.

@harleyquinn, actually i agree with harlequin. if the military was targeted maybe it’s because speaker bohner refuses to stop the construction of 400 million dollars worth of jet engines for the F35, a plane that was cancelled. we’re building engines for a plane that won’t be built. Maybe it’s because we’re now spend 100 million on abrams tanks that have been mothballed in the mojave desert that the military says it doesn’t want or need. maybe it’s because we spend more on the military than the next 8 countries combined. gee, maybe we should listen to our military leaders and cut the things that they say they don’t want and they say they don’t need.. or maybe harleyquinn knows better.

Dannysixpack – a whole lot of our allies who are partners in the F35 as well as an entire acquisition program in the USAF will be shocked to find out that they’ve been working on a cancelled program….. And that second engine – cancelled quite some time ago. And oh, it was the military leaders in Air Combat Command who wanted that second engine. Check your facts before you spout off about things you obviously know nothing about. What do I know, it’s only my day job…

“Social Security is not a savings plan.”
    I well aware of this.
“Problem with it is that people are living longer and longer. The elderly are starting to outnumber the younger”
    I don’t dispute your point.
I am pointing to the real fallacy (not falicy) from the right is that S. S. and Medicare are government freebies. I am saying those programs are a reasonable safety net for those who contributed into them all their working lives.
Even with the best planning, retiring financially worry free is not always a sure bet.
