One of the best cartoons I’ve ever seen here. We can never thank these amazing young men and women enough, or the officers who serve with them. I am so proud of our Vietnam vets who reach out to this generation of warriors. They welcome them home and give them a place where they can feel safe and understood. The troops and the country would be better served if instead of a rifle and a back-pack they were given a hammer, a shovel, a dozer, a back-hoe, a book, a ………. . There’s lots of work for young manpower and capital back at home. The garbage cans of world history is filled with failed empires who thought they could dominate the world with a strong military.
In 2003, when the war in Iraq began, I sent letters to my senators, my congressman, and then President Bush reminding them that in WW2, Americans had to make sacrifices in order to fight the war. Meatless tuesdays, gas rationing, rubber rationing, etc etc. were just some of the things Americans endured in the fight against Hitler and militant Japanese. I suggested, at that time, a 50 cent tax on gas, and a penny tax on store bought goods to fund the war, and to prepare VA hospitals and other necessary services for the wounded vets that would be coming back from the war. Sen. John Warner was the only one who replied to me. It was one of two letters from him that had his actual handwriting on it, but it simply thanked me and commended the ideas. We have a record number of vets homeless. Suicide among returning soldiers is way up. Riders and amendments attached to a recent bill designed, at its core, to give jobs and preferential hiring to veterans was killed. This is not an accusation, it is a statement of the status quo, It is also a challenge for readers to do something for veterans. First- write those you’ve elected and tell them to pass the veteran hiring bill without amendments or riders. Second- In this holiday season, send some packages to our men and women overseas and at sea. The military websites can tell you how. Third- Consider inviting a soldier, sailor, airman, or marine based near where you live to be part of your family for Thanksgiving Dinner and/or Christmas. Even if they aren’t overseas, most are too far away from ‘home’. Fourth- No matter where you are, when you see a person in uniform, or an old man bent with age wearing his US Veteran cap, Thank them for their service. Look them in the eye, shake their hand if its appropriate, and thank them. You can also do what I’ve done a few times and buy a round of beer/soda for a table full of servicemen. And now that I’ve made myself cry, I’m going to go do some chores. I miss my cousin Bobby. Respectfully, C.
