How dare these people ask for more money. They only work about 3/4th of the year, spend half their time sitting on their butt and contribute nothing important to our society!…Oh wait, you’re talking about teachers. I thought you meant football players.

Greed, that’s what’s it’s all about, they should be happy just to have a job in these hard times, they should be ashamed of themselves.

How do you plan on having a life when you and your kids are working 14 hr a day for nickles, because without collective bargining thats what the new pay scale will be!

These people make $75,000 a year, have fabulous benefits and their students score some of the lowest achievement scores in the nation. I have no sympathy.

Yup. The Teachers who pay out if there pockets for supplies and use dated text books in ill maintained facilities due to underfunding from tax cut after tax cut are the greedy scofflaws who don’t care about the students. It’s obviously not Rohm Emanuel or the Corporations who are trying to bust the Union get rid of seniority rules and privatize the public schools for their own personal gain. They would never do that. The kids always come first, not profits.

As a former teacher (non-union and in a private school) I take issue with your arguement that teachers work only 5.5 hrs/day. I got to school at 7am and didn’t leave until 4pm that is nine hours of work there. Yeah, I had a 25 min lunch break, but that was more often than not taken up with a mtg, making phone calls to parents, or preparing for a class in the afternoon. And I easily averaged an hour a day of work at home grading/preparing for the next day. Sure there are some bad teachers who don’t put in the effort, but those that do work very long hours to do it. Plus add the high stress of the job. And many if not most teachers don’t get the summer off-They are either taking classes to keep their certification (which the teacher pays for out of pocket more often than not), or working a 2nd job. I don’t like what the chicago teachers are doing, they do have a sweet deal already (they are making double what I was when I taught 8 years ago in VA) but I’m sick and tired of people acting like teaching is easy because they “only work 3/4 of the year” Sure bad teachers try to take advantage of it. But don’t label the majority of teachers as lazy because a very small minority try to game the system.

Oscar54, the United States spends more per student than most any country on Earth, yet we get some of the worst results. So, you lefties say we need to spend more?

Perhaps the problem is that often, teachers are pushing a liberal agenda, rather than teaching. Perhaps part of the problem is that no matter how bad of a job a teacher does, their union makes sure they keep their job- if you lefties really cared about the kids, I’d think you’d want bad teachers to be fired, rather than have countless kids get a poor education.

It all shows the typical dishonesty and hypocrisy of the left.

I’m seeing what these schools produce every day at work. It is sad. No math skills at all. We have to let go of 80% that we hire because of their lack of knowledge and inability to learn.
