Did Mr. McCoy (or nomad) snort at any cartoons showing Bush pulling dead American soldiers out of a helmet, stinking and skeletal? How much of our deficit can be attributed to the Iraq war and republicans’ demands of funding without questioning the billions, in the name of patriotism? It’s so easy for you to make fun of the current president after a few months; each month just a big republican “NO!” no comparable cartoons showing Iraqi “stimulus” spending over the last few years…Nomad, HQ, ANandy, please respond.

HQ, your snark (again) duly noted. Please respond as to WHY you think the stimulus is not a good idea. Quote Boehner, Limbaugh, MCConnell, Palin, anyone you want. Just debate the policy and jump up a bit from the phony snark. Isn’ it weird that the only ppl you ever hear talk about President Obama as “The Great”, “The One Who Must Be Obeyed”, etc are republicans? No dems that I’ve ever seen quoted (HQ-any rebutting links?), or that I have spoken to in person, ever uses that starry-eyed verbiage. Only hate-filled repubs like MCCoy. Still waiting for any substantive response!

How about I use Obama words. If we pass this now unemployment will not go over 8%. It is now at 9.5
How about I talk about all the job killing programs programs he wants? He spelled it out in his book he wants the government to be the be all and end all. Screw the private sector. How about you ezdeb give me 1 example where he has support private sector? Lets start with the promise he made to tax the top 5% who by the way supply and create the most jobs in the USA!

Show me where this stimulus has not created only more government jobs, excuse me Obama said “good government jobs that will trickle down to help the rest” the only thing it tried to save were Union jobs. and it failed at that!

ezdeb. Assuming you are seriously asking for an answer, consider this: according to the non-partisan GAO in fiscal 2008 the total Bush deficit was $400B. In January 2009 when Bush transferred to Obama the 2009 deficit was $1.1T. In May 2009 after 4 months in office the new GAO budget deficit figure was $1.86T. (50% increase) Obama got the votes for this massive spending spree by promising what was written above, not more than 8% unemployment.
Did Obama lie? If Bush did something like that the Dems would say he lied. I truly do not think Obama lied, he was just mistaken. He is human and allowed to be mistaken. I similarly do not believe Bush lied about WMD, he was just similarly mistaken.
BTW, the deficit numbers $1.86T do NOT include health, education, environment or immigration. Just where is all this money coming from?

Wow, HQ, not much substance. I note that 1) you do not provide any useful info in answer and 2) your responses are jeering challanges to me and more snickering at terms like “shovel ready”. You can’t punctuate either! HQ sez “How about I talk about all the job killing programs programs he wants?” Well? How about you talk about that? Job killing programs. Yeah, that’s what our president wants. Duh. In regards to your (rather incoherent) demand that “How about you ezdeb give me 1 example where he has support private sector? Did you mean popular support, HQ, as opposed to private sector businesses? If so, I direct you to a pretty comprehensive assessment by the WSJ. Link is: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123612000246123253.html
HQ sez “Show me where this stimulus has not created only more government jobs, excuse me Obama said “good government jobs that will trickle down to help the rest” the only thing it tried to save were Union jobs. and it failed at that!”
Ahem. First of all, why do you hate American union members? Shall I invite the New Haven firefighters to pummel you? Second, let’s go to this link: http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/news/1246955468164200.xml&coll=2
Perhaps HQ can tell us why employees of the Ohio Dept of Transportation should NOT be employed, union members or not. Should the people who use highways go without repairs? Are these saved AND created jobs going somehow to citizens who don’t deserve them? Wow. Oh, and HQ? Please back up your quote from President Obama. This one - Obama said “good government jobs that will trickle down to help the rest” I’m somehow betting you can’t. You, know, it’s really dishonest to use quote marks, especially to slander someone, when you are lying. Liar. Make me apologize. I dare you, liar.

Sorry, HQ. I didn’t realize you couldn’t read without glazing over. Geez, I thought the right were masters of, um, intellect. OK, now, try to be consistent. You only want to say insulting things, keep it light, and want no pushback. Gotcha! At least I got a link to a right-wing snark blog from HQ. Shorter Obama: Stimulus money going to municipalities/states to spend on projects (fire depts, etc) makes more sense than giving that $ to private for-profit companies. Wow, that’s EXACTLY the same as Reagan “trickle-down” not. Sorry, HQ, was that too much of a dissertation for your brain?

ezdeb: I assume you are preparing a reply to my earlier answer to your question.
You also ask about unions and do we hate unions? Again, assuming you are seriously asking here are some inconvenient facts.
When GM was taken over stock holders were wiped out, bond holders were wiped out, accounts receivable people were wiped out. Example: an ad agency ordered and paid for $225M in TV/magazine etc advertising. They were owed that money. Their receivable were wiped out. The only people who got their money were the unions. It is a strange coincidence that the one group that donated to Obama was protected and everyone else lost everything.

Sorry for the delay, GNW; my internet was sooo slow I gave up till later. Now it’s later. It’s my understanding that the GAO’s estimate and the escalating deficit numbers include GWBush’s tax cuts being kept on. They ARE being kept on, by the way, despite the claim that President Obama wants to raise taxes. The GAO estimate also took a huge jump when part two of the (Bush) TARP program went into effect after 1/1/09. These numbers were revised, I believe, in June 2009. So, yes. The deficit does increase. And yes, I agree that the Obama administration made an error in the 8% guess. This does not mean they are not trying to put the fire out. Do you see the difference between being angry at the policies that set the fire, and being (shallowly) angry because the fire dept hasn’t yet put it out after it smoldered for years and burst into a pyre thru neglect?
Your point about GM is questionable. You state that everyone was wiped out except the unions, which you say “got their money”. The US gov’t currently owns 30% of the “new” GM, the Canadian gov’t and interests own 29%, the unions own 17.5% and promissory notes, and the stockholders own 23%. In exchange for the 17.5%, the UAW takes on the responsibility of managing all retirement and health benefits for retired GM workers from now on forever. Your assertion that there’s a strange coincidence does not follow.
Again, can ONE of you tell me why “the unions”, who are made up of American workers, are enemies? Is it necessary to have monolithic enemies in order for you to hate? “The government” is out to get us, “the unions”, “the libs”, etc. It makes me sad that you don’t get that we are all individuals. My mom belongs to a nurses’ union, my brother in law is a contract (union) teacher in a rural boarding school for isolated ranchers’ kids. My dad and my sister are veterans and receive excellent medical care thru the VA, a “socialist, single payer healthcare provider”. Are we your enemies? Sorry to make you doze and drool, HQ…

Oh, GNW, I forgot. What do you think would have happened to the $225m that ad agency spent if GM went down without restructuring? Oh yeah, they would lose it then, too. So would the stockholders, the pensioners, the suppliers, etc. What would be gained? I’ll await your replies. HQ, still waiting for some substance from you, sir.

So bottom line is what I said. Government jobs good private not good. plus he said trickle down from those good jobs? Never did I say Reagan. I am waiting for your apology. Or are you going to quible about a “paraphrase” of all things.
My point we should not have spent the money at all! He should have just gotten out of the way. Now we are in that 30% chance of total failure Joe told us about. And every one else said if we did NOTHING we would have had a 50/50 chance of coming out of “the worst rescission since the great depression”
Now Obama is Oops our bad we did not have all the facts or the wrong facts to make that prediction….Who can blame him mean it not like it was his money.
Funny you brought up Ohio where Obama flew in to make sure everyone knows that 25 more police were on the job because of him. Flash forward, Those jobs never came to be. Sorry. But jobs like that are best left up to the States!
Bottom line stimulus fail!

ezdeb: Re unions. Unions are wonderful for their members. They get paid way out of proportion to supply and demand because they and they only can unite to bargain together. By law management cannot do that.
BUT, only 8% of non government workers are unionized. That means 92% of all non government American workers are subsidizing the unions. That is elite and not fair. And of course the unions in many cases are closed because if they weren’t they could not maintain their artificial salaries.
Also unions care nothing about everyone else. Here in NYC they closed the schools, the hospitals, the newspapers, the police (blue flu) for their own selfish benefit. Why should I care for them they certainly do not care about anyone else.
Why do liberals hate the wealthy beneficiaries of capitalism and love the equally small numbers of wealthy labor beneficiaries? You are harming 92% to benefit 8%.
ezdeb
said,

OK, neither of you are answering any questions. HQ, you simply reply that polls are bad. Not a tool to measure anything, just bad. Your “sight”, however, is cool, numbers-wise. GNW, you just reply that “unions” care nothing about everyone else. The unions close all other service agencies, like hospitals, right? How? No info, just unfounded assertions. Unions harm 92% to benefit 8%? But your belief is that the 8% is on the botttom. I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree. Please read some US history, specifically about the stimulus passed by FDR during the great depression. Do you think he did the wrong thing? Read anything regarding the “success” of our capitalist system in the 20’s and 30’s. This and the economic upheaval of the industrial revolution in the US brought about the need for unions to protect workers from the many abuses of for-profit companies that made a few rich. Remember the Triangle Shirtwaist Company fire? No? Didn’t think so. Your only argument is that unions are evil and give advantages to poor people. Evil, no context, no history, no discussion. HQ, PLEASE lern how two spel!!
HQ’s last comment: “Oh and the job killer, I file that one under the phony religion “climate change” he wants to shove down our throat.” That tells me all I need to know. Thanks. Oh, and I DO apologize for calling you a liar. You are a not-smart person who leaves spittle flecks on your keyboard in your haste to reply in such a brilliant fashion. Your uninformed snark will take the place of any actual discussion, and that’s the way you like it! Thanks for unintentionally, without actual debate, letting me know how useless this conversation is.
GNW, did I say I hate wealthy beneficiaries of capitalism? You STATED that unions are evil. You say that only 8% of non-government employees are union. Here is a BLS link that breaks it down. http://www.bls.gov/news.release/union2.nr0.htm
Now, this is information from the agency that puts out the statistics. Frankly, the rest of the statistics will probably make BOTH of you smirk, because it shows black people have the highest union membership in the U.S. See, this is information, though. It is the portal thru which we see dialogue. It’s not (HQ!) just insults. Weird, huh? An interesting discussion can be had about, say, Captain Sully. He landed his airliner in the Hudson River not long ago. He is slated to retire soon, and because of union-busting federal policies in the 80’s, he’ll be replaced by a pilot with roughly the same experience and job knowledge as the young pilot and co-pilot who crashed their plane in upstate New York due only to inexperience. Non-union employees can harm others, too, GNW. Much different quality of training when the airline company is focused completely on shaving cost, without a mechanics’, pilots’ or attendants’ unions to call out errors and deficiencies.Capt. Sully himself warned of it. When you call something only evil or perfect, you can’t talk about it. My opinion is that we tend to have a “pendulum” mentality. Things swing so far one way that ppl have to try to protect themselves as the powerful take all they are able to take. This applies to unions as well as federal gov’t power, Congress, hospitals, anyone. Then, when we’ve had enough, the pendulum swings wildly the other direction; we pass laws to outlaw that which we passed laws to enforce just 50 years prior. Whoever is in power needs watching. Unions can be just as abusive as any other unregulated power. I subscribe to the “eternal vigilance” thought of protecting our democracy. I can’t respect your “I hate them cuz they hate them cuz they hate them so I hate them” thought. Care to try again? HQ, I can’t wait to see what you have to say. “Yeah? Well Obama is a doo-doo head and I know it and you don’t cuz yer a librul stoopid doo-doo head!!! Snort” That’s my guess.

Who needs to quote anybody? Simple common sense would tell you that the stimulus was rotten to the core from the start.
You cannot spend your way out of debt. A negative plus a negative will always land you with a bigger negative.
Our politicians have spent decades acting like the laws of finance do not apply to them. The law of finance still applies and behavior like this has consequences attached.
Obama spends money just like Bush, Clinton, Bush, Regan, Carter, Ford and many before him did. He is as much a part of the problem as the other presidents because he continues to spend money like they did.

Five months is not enough time to fix a problem neglected for eight years. The economy was on full meltdown when inherited. Waste time and money and the health of our troops in Iraq. Whine on when before you were silent in the face of true neglect. At least the stimulus money is being spent on U.S. soil and not outside the country.
DrCanuck said, 3 months ago
Yes, only a portion of the stimulus has been assigned at this point. Would you conservatives prefer Obama just throw money out quickly and indiscriminately as Bush did, or slowly vett the recipients to ensure it’s going to honest and effective businesses?
