It is strange that a man who believes torture is wrong would allow partial birth abortions which evidence shows causes great distress to the fetus. What hypocrasy.

For the love of God, people, Obama is not “pro-abortion”. Have you even bothered to listen to his speeches on the topic? He has said again and again that he wants to reduce the number of abortions precisely because they are so tragic. But he recognizes that an absolute ban on them will simply drive the practice underground and make them more and more dangerous. Instead, he’s interested in stemming the tide of unwanted pregnancies and finding ways to encourage adoption. This is the answer. Overturning Roe v. Wade is not the answer.

    tpenna, you speak truth.

Irish Cook, you lie. It is illegal to abort in the third trimester - when viability becomes a reality.

It has become increasingly clear that those who claim to be “pro-life” are a sham. They do not want to reduce the number of abortions. If they did, they would listen to the president. If they truly wanted to cut down on that number, they would give up the attack on Roe -v- Wade. Look at Brazil – making it illegal doesn’t stop it. But changing the conditions (better health care, better sex education, better birth control) DOES make a difference.

The so-called “pro-lifers” are not pro life. They have no interest in helping care for the people who are already here. They are interested in forcing some poor teenage girl to give birth (because the rich will just go somewhere else or use their private doctors who are paid to shut up) but not in helping her once she has the baby. Then they’ll say, “She should have known better.”

What these falsely called pro-lifers want is a) to be punitive and b) to have an eternal talking point.

As to scripture, show me where to bible says abortion is illegal. Not murder, mind you because those who are not born are not alive – and if you want to be entirely scriptural, infanticide is not condemned. (Psalm 137, eg., Happy shall he be who takes your little ones, *
and dashes them against the rock!”)

Rather inflamatory. As the Prez said, we should seek a middle ground in this issue, nothing is gained by throwing mud at each other.

What else can they attack him on? Even after the Notre’ Dame speech when he advanced social agendas that would decrease the need (such as financial, lack of health care) McCoy drags out the mantra. We have gone over this over and over again. If a woman is desperate and abortion is illegal she will still get an abortion, no matter how dangerous it might be. Women used to die like flies from illegal abortions, before Roe V. Wade. Don’t bring those days back.

In Deuteronomy it states that if you kill a pregnant slave, you die. If the slave lives, but the unborn dies, you only pay a fine. So much for equivalence. Killing women by refusing them care is murder, and medically, abortion especially early term, may save their lives. Jews know about Te Sachs, and certain death of the child. Anencephaly , a fetus with no brain, never survives, and often isn’t detected very early on. Dropping bombs on six year olds is killing. Dropping cluster bombs that look almost like the food packets your dropping in Afghanistan is essentially murder of children. A small mass of cells in an embryo is not human, and not assured of ever becoming one, but war is “righteous”?

Wow, Lego. It’s pretty much common knowledge that a number of women died in botched abortions before the procedure was made legal by Roe v. Wade. I don’t think we should have to cite statistics for something that everybody knows.

  20. believecommonsense

    believecommonsenseGenius_badge said, 6 months ago

oldlego, whoa, calm down! why attack deadhead for speaking what is common knowledge, as tpenna says. Perhaps saying “like flies” wasn’t the most apt metaphor, but women did die from home remedies and botched back alley abortions.

When I was in nursing school in 1960, my Ob-gyn, nursing instructor told us that she got her degree and also worked in Chicago and in that large city women came to the hospital with sepsis and blood loss and the mortality rate was “very high” from illegal abortion. I myself saw a woman in a coma from sepsis following an illegal abortion. She later died. I saw many women and girls come in hemmorhaging after illegal abortions during the ‘60’s. Feminist literature and history has plenty of examples of what the risks of illegal abortion were and are. I’m getting pretty sick and tired of your tiresome insults, oldego—- don’t treat me like a punching bag for whatever reason you may have.

deadhead, I have a close friend who went to Mexico for an abortion prior to Roe v Wade. Incredible story. My friend was OK, but another US woman didn’t fare so well. Hemorrhaging wouldn’t stop. The clinic in Mexico released her anyway. My friend never found out what happened to her. The entire journey my friend described was frightening. I’m sure you remember attempts at home with knitting needles and coat hangers. That stuff was real and deadly.
I too would like to see the incidence of abortion reduced, but it should never go back to the horrors of pre Roe v. Wade.
Palin even opposes abortion in cases of rape, incest and danger to a woman’s health. Unbelievable.

  23. deadheadzan

    deadheadzanGenius_badge said, 6 months ago

Yes, bcs, it’s true and those of us that know what happened to women before Roe v Wade never want to go back to it. Always remember, it’s a serious choice and never to be taken lightly, but keep abortion safe and legal. And make birth control available to all women- the most practical way to cut back on abortions.

I hardly think there’s a strong comparison, DS. Nobody can make an argument that an abortion performed in a medical facility is as dangerous as one performed illegally before Roe v. Wade.
