Someone just don’t get it! Free market attempts without regulation has obviously been responsible for most of this mess. Blame Bush all you want, but the Congress should share! Clinton wasn’t any smarter that Bush, but his strong suit is putting together people that can make things work. Much more successful than intellectual. Bush could’t put together people to get the job done. Look how many were replaced and forced to resign during his terms!

So for the last eight years, Bush has forced big government on us.

And, completely coincidentally, McCoy has decided to take a stand against it only after Obama is president???

Just when you think McCoy is the biggest hypocrite imaginable, he shows us that he’s an even bigger hypocrite!

C’mon, McCoy, can you top this tomorrow?

JDG, Good observation. PS Eisenhower once stated “you don’t have to be a good general to be great. You have to know how to select good subordinates”.

Free market is dead…That’s what they were saying after the New Deal.

Let’s take the example of credit card companies. People are in debt up to their necks because they took credit cards. Agreed, they should have said no but credit card companies shouldn’t be allowed to sollicit people through the mail three times in a single month without even wondering is they can afford to pay. Next thing you know, they’ll sell credit cards in vending machines. That’s an example of an industry who needs some ground rules.

cfrog, it’s OK with me if credit credit cos solicit folks on an hourly basis … it’s not govt’s role to protect people from their own faulty instincts … but govt has a role regulating the industry so credit cad cos. can’t sign you up at 12% interest then jack your interest to 28% because you were late with a payment to a completely different credit card …. this kind of highway robbery usury laws began in the late 90s (i think) so we can’t even blame Bush for giving finance cos. carte blanche to shaft customers without reason

They arrass us with credit card junk mail, but it’s forbidden to do publicity for cigarettes…go figure.

Why isn’t the “free market” powerful enough to take down “Big Gov.”?

I think mostly without regulation the market has no focus. Everyone is selfishly pulling a different direction.

Unfortunately, selfishness is what makes capitalism work. Face it, you’ll work a lot harder to feed, house and clothe YOUR family than mine. Same reason communism is a pipe dream; you take away the profit motive and motivation goes with it. As noted already, government’s role in a free society is mostly to prevent one citizen from screwing another.

fullwilson,¡¡YES!! Stalin had to wipe out the independent farmers to create the collectives and then everyone starved.

Point is, most of us “libs” want to make sure that there is a way to prevent one citizen from screwing another. The present debacle in the financial sector has pretty well shown that we have not reached that blessed state!
