Wait - a sign of the kid being emotionally disturbed is he refused to participate in an illegal drinking party? And he tells Gil about that, and Gil doesn’t care about the drinking? This is the big payback from that party weeks ago?

As for taking a baseball bat to the tree, there was probably a kid stuck up there and he was just trying to help him get down.
