    Why can’t that receptionist just call or go in and tell Melba about this visitor. I mean, she is not guarding Ft. Knox or the president of the USA! Melba is only the mayor of a small hick town.

    True that the GA town is not New York or Chicago, but I wouldn’t dismiss it as a “hick town”. At times it seems fairly large and sophisticated. I think of it as being about the size of Bangor Maine, with Rufus and Joel being from the rural northern part of Maine.

    I know this is a comic strip. I used to be a Office Receptionist and she is doing the job right. For a boss or elected official, unless family, has important work and the receptionist to secretary has to screen visitors.
