Customs change, Ladyfingers. Something you learned a few years ago didn’t apply in Nam, and what guys like Joe and me learned in the Nam era wasn’t how things were done in the WWII era. Heck, all the screaming people are doing about gays in the Army now sounds pretty much like the screaming about women in the Army twenty years ago and the screaming about blacks in the Army sixty years ago. My black mates in the 7th of the 15th were good soldiers, and I figure women in the service now are doing their jobs.

That rank, Staff Sargeant, has been around for a very long time.

Oh, by the way, Skeezix, FAR OUT.

Re; Joe-Allen comment - I agree with you, if a base commander decided we neede to wear sparkles in your hair the prudent thing to do was wear the sparkles until he left.

I didn’t know anything about Army rank/stripes that I didn’t learn from F-Troop or Gomer Pyle.

I used to think Nina’s name was pronounced “nee-na”– it’s actually pronounced with a long “i”. With her maiden name, it was meant to sound like “nine o’clock”.

When I was in the 101st back in the 70s the CG required us to wear blue berets that we had to buy at the surplus store off the main gate. If you didn’t you had to wear a steel pot.

I never had to salute an NCO that I can recall. The dumbest thing I remember was saluting a passing officer’s car, and some would stop and chew you out if you didn’t.

Ah, you weren’t looking for blue bumper stickers?
