This actually was true in some places when times were more relaxed. I’ve heard stories from colleagues whose grad professors occasionally held class in a quiet bar.

The unfortunate part is that this is a middle school, not grad school. When people ask why kids don’t learn, it might be because a lot of them are blasted, and their parents bought it for them. I don’t have a problem with adults (frankly, that means 18 and old enough for war) drinking, but we’re losing a lot of kids at very young ages to addictions. It is the fact our society is a “blame the other guy for all my problems, so make him solve/pay for them” group, both left and right, on the political spectrum.

humankind has been around for thousands of years. yet, the human lifespan is only about 70 years. that leaves us but a short time to educate ourselves and try to figure things out. it’s inevitable that we don’t get everything right - we’re only human. abortion, however, is a no-brainer; it’s wrong.

And being married to a president qualified her? I don’t think so.

Being president is like being a parent for the first time. No one is ever trained or prepared for it. And by the time you’re qualified and prepared the job is done and they don’t want you doing it anymore.

Teachable moment is a term being used a lot these days. It does look condescending. On the other hand, I’m pushing 50 and know that I still have a thing or two to learn.

At least President Obama can admit when he’s made a mistake without talking to 50 different lawyers and arguing about what the definition of is, is. The guy is doing a good job. We need to support him better.

If he can admit he made a mistake would a public apology over the whole police officer thing been too much to ask.. He said he didn’t know the facts and later said he mispoke but thats more like appeasement than apology.. and really should we be any less critical of him than his predecessors.. We let the Bomster slide on things we would have ridiculed Bush for years over (who would have probably screwed his lines up with something like heh, well I.. heh.. Could have handled that better, no hard .. What was I saying? umm.. heh.. Oh yeah! stimulus money for everyone..) .. Teflon Bill well its hard to say.. He would have probably been like.. (I mispoke and I apologize but lets use this moment to all come together and humans and realize we all make mistakes) - and forgiveness would have been given in heart felt waves..

Hang on, nomad; I’m out of my office and away from my reference lists. I’ll get it to you later. (It’s not only OK; it’s pretty much ordered. Perhaps another literate Christian could help me out here; it’s in Psalms.)

  17. WestTex13

    WestTex13 said, 3 months ago

Actually depending on the transcription translation. Older versions says “Thou shall not murder”. Murder is defined as

–noun 1. Law. the killing of another human being under conditions specifically covered in law. In the U.S., special statutory definitions include murder committed with malice aforethought, characterized by deliberation or premeditation or occurring during the commission of another serious crime, as robbery or arson (first-degree murder), and murder by intent but without deliberation or premeditation (second-degree murder).

    1. Slang. something extremely difficult or perilous: That final exam was murder!

    2. a group or flock of crows.

–verb (used with object) 4. Law. to kill by an act constituting murder.

    1. to kill or slaughter inhumanly or barbarously.

    2. to spoil or mar by bad performance, representation, pronunciation, etc.: The tenor murdered the aria.

    So take your pick..

    Bak to da toon:

How much the world has changed!

When I was in college (mid-70’s), my “Study of History” professor, Dean Dean (title and first name) had the following protocol for our weekly class sessions on warm sunny autumn days:

    Volunteer with a car drives to package store, buys case of Stroh’s (the Dean’s favorite domestic);
    Volunteer returns to “old campus” wooded area where two semicircular benches faced one another;
We drank beer (2 apiece) and had class.

We all chipped in, and the case was kinda’ kept outta’ sight.

By the time my daughter went to the same school, they were d@mn near expelling students for the least possession of alcohol on campus.

Below is the real context of your Bible quote. It is not God speaking in the quote but a Hebrew morning the destruction of Jerusalem. Your “God is FOR killing children” interpretation couldn’t be more incorrect. It is actually a man lamenting his homeland and cursing his Babylonian captors. Nice try - thanks for playing.

Psalm 137:1 By the waters of Babylon, there we sat down and wept, when we remembered Zion. 2 On the willows there we hung up our lyres. 3 For there our captors required of us songs, and our tormentors, mirth, saying, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” 4 How shall we sing the LORD’s song in a foreign land? 5 If I forget you, O Jerusalem, let my right hand wither! 6 Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, if I do not remember you, if I do not set Jerusalem above my highest joy! 7 Remember, O LORD, against the E’domites the day of Jerusalem, how they said, “Rase it, rase it! Down to its foundations!” 8 O daughter of Babylon, you devastator! Happy shall he be who requites you with what you have done to us! 9 Happy shall he be who takes your little ones and dashes them against the rock!

Still trying to listen to you, nomad; but you seem reticent about defending your faith. You’re probably right; it’s not worth defending.

And teaguemj, I will listen to anything you have to say provided it is backed by thought, reason, or evidence. As long as you are simply parroting things that other people have told you, I’m not interested. I’ve heard it all many times before. Falling back on the old “God’ll git you for not agreeing with me” argument is rather juvenile.

  34. teaguemj

    teaguemj said, 3 months ago

Canuck, I’m 59 years young, and have seen and heard a few just like you. You will know a man by his works. Do not spend time talking and talking, see what he/she does. You spend your time confusing those who will listen to you, and spreading lies by twisting the Lords’ words. What right do you have to do that? Well, God is allowing it. When the final judgement comes, you will be held accountable. I can’t spend much time on this forum, I have other sheep to see to. So does the “LightArtsTeacher.” So go on spouting your nonsense. Hopefully, there are those who will ignore you. I am sure I’ll see you around. I always do.

  35. nomad2112

    nomad2112 said, 3 months ago

DrCanuck, you’ve heard it all before ‘eh? But you still don’t listen. Thought, reason, and evidence are all vanity for someone can not interpret what he senses. You may as well be deaf, dumb, and blind. You think that you are “open minded” but, your mind hasn’t held an original thought in years. Your “new” ideas slip through your fingers like sand. Your direction is that of a rudderless ship without anchor nor compass. Your cynicism is your comfort zone.

  39. nomad2112

    You mean this one?

Oh, I get it; it’s only OK to abort babies and kill children if they belong to a different culture, like Babylon, or, in modern terms, Iraqi babies. That has indeed made many Americans happy. Thank you for clearing that up. (Quite the bloodthirsty little tribal god you have there.)

Also, you state the Bible is NOT the word of God but the words of Israelis (a captive Israeli in this case). Can you defend that statement too?

  40. nomad2112

    nomad2112 said, 3 months ago

Nomad: you did. You said, ” It is not God speaking in the quote but a Hebrew morning the destruction of Jerusalem. It is actually a man lamenting his homeland and cursing his Babylonian captors.”

So now you’re in a bind. Either God is in favour of bashing in babies’ heads or the Bible is (partially) the words of human beings. Pick one.

  42. nomad2112

    nomad2112 said, 3 months ago

My, your Biblical views are very fundamental. Psalm 137 is a historical passage. Any one can tell that just from a surface reading of the text. To say that it is God himself speaking is absurd. Now I’m fairly sure that the Holy Quaran is believed to be written by a single man as dictated by God but it is not so with the Bible. I’m sure that you know the Bible was written by many people over thousands of years. Some passages are divine quotes i.e. “I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac”. Some passages like Psalm 137 are historical.
