I drive a smart car and love it. Getting about 40 mpg, drives like a dream, is plenty big for my needs and is fun. What’s your experience with it?

One point that would make me happier about it would be the Small Business Administration or IRS or somebody limiting the size of cars that business firms (Large and Small) can write off as business expenses. Most of the Hummers and huge SUV’s in my area carry somewhat inconspicuous advertising for Tae-Kwon-Do teachers, Realtors, and Home decorators, who write the cost off as business deductions. Most I look into are living on SBA loans!

If not for the tax break, AM General never would have been able to market the Hummer and sell it to G.M. The same applies to many of the overweight (part of the tax law) gas hogs we see on the road. Farmers do need heavy duty trucks at times. Mom’s taking a kid to private school in a rig registered to her husband’s business, do not. (We agree on this one will)

If the toonist expects me to feel sympathy for the realtor, he can think again. So what? is my response

Having the realtor pulling a Rickshaw would have been better.

CD and stew– Insurance institute and others have tested the Smart Car- it has about the highest safety rating of any car on the road in all impact/crash tests. The biggest myth in U.S. car history is that bigger is safer. In actuality, that turns out almost the opposite of the truth. Don’t recommended getting hit by a semi in a honda, or by a train in a Hummer. The secret is avoiding accidents in the first place, which big rigs are much poorer at, don’t turn, don’t stop etc..

Stew, for a change you do cite some real data, but there is a twist.. The Chevy “onstar” ad shows a vehicle with poor brakes and handling swerving to miss a deer and hitting a tree. The “onstar” calls an ambulance. I’d rather have a car with brakes, handling, and lighter weight to miss the deer AND the tree! Forget the onstar calling an ambulance. Years ago, my wife drove my Lotus, lightest car imported, off a cliff(driver error) and only got black eyes. The car’s design sacrificed itself and saved her. A mile up the road a Buick went off in a later accident, not nearly as far down the hill, and all four people inside were killed. They were wearing seat belts too, but it was the weight of the car that collapsed it and crushed them all.
As noted, I prefer a car that can avoid an accident, and if worse happens, which is in most cases above 35 mph, a single car accident, I want the car to “sacrifice itself” and keep me alive.
As I noted above, I don’t recommend you take on a semi in a Honda, or a train in a Hummer, there is after all always someone bigger than you!

Dude, like I said, I own one. Drove through this New York winter just fine. It handles way better than my Saturn did (which I loved and drove for 11 years). But hey, nobody’s forcing you to buy one so have fun.

Stewie, you’re concerned with intellectual honesty? So far all I’ve see you concerned with is insulting anybody you can. Which makes you intellectually irrelevant.

Opinion: “This pizza tastes good.”
Opinion: “This pizza tastes bad.”
Fact: “This pizza has mozzarella cheese on it.”
I’m sure that there could be an argument over whether the pizza tastes good or bad, but you can’t argue over whether the pizza has mozzarella on it or not.
Well, I suppose you could…

The wealthiest folks in my community were: Physicians, Dentists, Realtors, and Successful Business People. (and a few Middle Easterners, who share in wealth from back home.) I think the realtors needed a reality check. Everyone does occasionally.
