Sure, buy a scratching post, they’ll still use the furniture.

Indeed. Why is it that cats never use the furniture you buy especially for THEM? My son bought an entire cat castle but the cat just ignores it.

A nail file is less noisy then a scratching post.

Ever since I got a scratching post my cats stopped scratching the furniture.

Has Garfield grown out of shredding the curtains?

Cats not obtained from a registered breeder will likely not know what a ‘cat tree’ is. They make spray on attractants to get the cat’s interest. You can also use a string tease toy to lure them to (and up and down) the cat tree. My last 4 cats have been from a breeder (Maine Coons) so they knew a cat tree straight away. My previous cat, given to me by my brother/sister-in-law as a gift, took to the cat trees by using the aforementioned methods. Whatever you do, don’t push the cat into using it … it will then consider the tree a ‘punishment device’ and avoid it all the more.

Not all cats are interested in catching mice. Some are more interested in frogs.
