    If Gomer were named Ernest instead, then you’d have a little tribute to Jim Varney (but in this case, Gomer/Ernest would the one squashed).

    If memory serves correctly Gomer started on The Andy Griffth
    Show and then starred in his own show Gomer Pyle USMC.
    Jim Varney started out in commercials featuring Ernest asking “Know what I mean, Vern?” who was always off camera.
