What a cat! A cat for all seasons. Sassy. Opinionated. This lasagna loving, mailman chasing, sarcastic cat is a classic that readers love. Garfield, Odie and Jon will leave you wanting a daily dose of this beloved bunch! Garfield’s crafty talent with words and sneaky preference for practical jokes often leave his owner, Jon - and us - speechless, and always wanting more.

I didn’t know Jon took Garfield to the Tuna Canary (Cannery).

Garfield has a leftover??!!!
Llewellenbruce said, 2 months ago
Garfield has started a new diet. Just half a bird per meal.
DreamScourge said, 2 months ago
He probably got a job lot from the pet store and just couldn’t eat any more.
saturntv said, 2 months ago
Yeesh. There’s one way to take away an appetite. Should help if Jon is on a diet.

Don’t know if I’m the only one to notice, but this is actually Nermal’s 30th b’day, introduced in the strip 9-3-79

Happy Birthday Nermal! WOW! 30!
I’m with Sjoujke…Garfield has leftovers? Is he not feeling well? If so, he’s not the only one…Jon sounds like he’s about to lean over the bowl.

Doesn’t Jon follow “Don’t look, don’t yell”?
Mitstan said, 2 months ago
Happy Birthday Nermal! And Jon always yells when he opens the fridge… anyone else notice that recently? :)

I can’t believe Garfield left a leftover, or that there’s ever anything in that fridge.
Happy birthday Nermal and I wish we saw you more often. Once Nermal came to visit and Garfield said, it figures, it was a Monday.

That’s rare that Garfield has leftovers!
Happy Birthday, Nermal!

Garfield Minus Appetite?
Comic-Nut said, 2 months ago
Yeah, where is Nermal? Haven’t seen him in ages. This would have been a good day to trot him out to badger Garfield.
chinook2 said, 2 months ago
Not something I would openly admit, saying it was my leftover canary.
say, how does Garfield get leftovers? doesn’t he eat it all at once?%Pr
chinook2 said, 2 months ago
I have no idea what that %Pr at the ends of my comments are… my computer must have a glitcPr

Thanks for the reminder, cymbol. I remembered Odie’s “birthday” is 8 Aug., but forgot Nermal’s “birthday” is today 3 Sept. Then comes the “birthday” of Garfield’s teddy Pooky on 23 Oct. (although he’ll be 31, whatever happened to that bear now?).

Garfield looks pensive in the first two panels. Maybe he’s thinking up some birthday prank to pull on Nermal.

If this doesn’t show up on Garfield Minus Garfield, I’ll be very surprised.
By the way, Garfield declared National Fat Week on September 17, 1979. Wicked!
We also get introduced (nearly) to Liz the Vet on October 1, 1979.
We actually see Pooky (and by name) for the first time on October 16, 1979. That’s just over 30 years ago.
Irma the waitress? October 19, 1979.
(The list goes on…)

This also happens to be the day the For Better or Worse strip started, in 1979
