What a cat! A cat for all seasons. Sassy. Opinionated. This lasagna loving, mailman chasing, sarcastic cat is a classic that readers love. Garfield, Odie and Jon will leave you wanting a daily dose of this beloved bunch! Garfield’s crafty talent with words and sneaky preference for practical jokes often leave his owner, Jon - and us - speechless, and always wanting more.

Well, there goes Jon’s hearing.
I like the implied horns coming out of Garfield’s expressions in the first and last panels.

Luv Garfield in the third panel. He looks like he’s taking enough air in to blow harder than a hurricane.

Naturally, Garfield has a tuba lying around for just such an emergency ! Ha Ha Ha !
Be sure to get enough air in you now, G !

Macushlalondra, I’ve been away for a few days; just found your lasagna recipe. Thank you so very much. I will try it this fall when the weather cools down a bit.

Where did Garfield get $9K for a Sousaphone (not a tuba)?
owenlover529 said, 3 months ago
I think Jon being deaf would make him happier because he wouldn’t have to here all the women turn him down for a date…
princepavel said, 3 months ago
And a onea and a twoa….Jon’s lucky Garfield didn’t think of a bagpipe! Then the whole neighborhood would be entertained!…Panel 4 is Jon peeling himself off the ceiling!

Frodo, that is a tuba. A Sousaphone wraps around the player, a tuba is held in the hands.
Joe Allen Doty said, 3 months ago
While Garfield can do almost anything he wants, a real cat could not even play a tuba because they don’t have the right kind of lips to create an aperture before blowing through the mouth piece.
I know about that because my younger brother played trombone in his high school orchestra.
I used to have a steer horn with a brass instrument mouth piece put in the narrow end of it. One could actually blow several on-key notes with it.

I wonder if Garfield is neutered. If not … Jon might start considering it …. LMAO.
comixavier said, 3 months ago
Yes, Garfield. The cymbals are getting old for that gag.

Actually, Jim Davis took a little liberty here, not that it matters a h3ll of a lot. A tuba would have the bell straight up, I believe, while the Sousaphone points forward, as here, and yes, it’s designed to be “worn”, but this one here also has no valves. So it’s a Garfield/Davis hybrid, eminently suitable for a comic strip.

dstufff said, 3 months ago
In the 3rd panel, is Garfield going to blow into the tuba or eat it?
gab4x4 said, 3 months ago
I don’t know about a tuba, but my old cat LOVED waking me up with the big horn I use to keep in my house. nothing like a 5:30 Wake up call from the other end of the house with a horn screeming, lol.

i played a tuba for a couple of years in my high school band. it was not the sousaphone which wrapped around the body, but the bell did point forward. when we did instrument demonstrations at our concerts at grade schools, i would lift it over my head rather than carry it to the front of the band. it was actually quite a versatile instrument. i used to play the opening bars of the “Marseillaise” to demonstrate the range of notes you could get, and i once heard a recording of “duelling tubas” (a tuba version of “duelling banjos”).

Dry - You don’t need garfields’ help, you’re a one woman band.
Susan001 said, 3 months ago
Maybe the instrument is wrapped around Garfield and we can’t see it because the table is in the way.
I’m sure it’s a sousaphone.
lincolnhyde said, 3 months ago
Actually, I think it’s a French horn, with the bell turned - there’s just not enough tubing for either a tuba or a sousaphone.
maxamillian said, 3 months ago
What a wakeup call…..
EarlWash said, 3 months ago
Hey, why should Garfield care what it is, so long as it is affective for his intended purposes? Beside that, it’s probably something Jon had made for himself, and he had absolutely NO idea what for.
princepavel said, 3 months ago
Holy picky Batman…WHO CARES WHAT THE HECK IT IS, Sousaphone, tuba..whatever!..call it a Garflona…It;s a COMIC People, any resemblance to reality is purely a coincidence….sheesh!
betty101 said, 3 months ago
Let’s hope he can play.
Roxy13 said, 3 months ago
Good i guess
kab2rb said, 3 months ago
yyyguy I’ve heard where some gather around play those instruments, tubas, and they where good. For bagpipes I’ve heard them as well and played right they are good.
We where in this park where different town area gather called samplers fest and the tent my sister and brother-in-law where in they have a booth, well behold there was a school band with a tuba playing as well you could not here yourself think.
AKHenderson said, 3 months ago
Hey, Opus the Penguin could make it a duet.
(In “Bloom County” he played the tuba in the band “Deathtongue.” Opus interpreted “heavy metal” to be synonymous with “weighty brass.”)
saturntv said, 3 months ago
Don’t worry, Jon. Garfield can fix that.
