    Ushindi,I so OWN a copy of Captain Blood. I’m a Basil Rathbone fan.

    I’ve never seen a fast food place that had catsup in a squirt bottle. They always just have those annoying little packets that you rip open and it explodes and covers your hand with the stuff.

    But then, I don’t eat out much.

    The squirt bottle is a bit of an anachronism in restaurants these days. However, without it, this joke doesn’t work. Or, the joke gets lower brow… :)

    Lewreader, for me it’s the complete opposite. Growing up, Ketsup was always in the house. Now, I never touch the stuff - not even if a recipe calls for it.

    I end-up (so to speak) doing the same thing, with squeeze bottles of spicy mustard for my hot pooches. Eventually, I just give up the f@rtin’ method, and go get a li’l spoon to stick ‘way on down to the bottom to scrape it dry.

    Always thought that the squeeze bottles were a diabolical ploy, on the part of The Catsoup Companies, to get us idjittz to just toss the bottle in the trash when it startin’ f@rtin’ (even though there was still a bunch left in the dang thing) - “Wellp, guess they ain’t nuttin’ left in thar”………..Better put ”get sum ketcshupp” on the grocery list.

    MrSpock & Librarian: I have a large collection of these old movie posters, as well as old WWII propaganda posters. I also have the movie “C. Blood”, and of course the classic “Robin Hood” (poor Basil got it again there, of course). My favorite is a VHS tape copied from when a Chico, Ca. TV station did a retrospective many years ago on the making of Robin Hood - the Sherwood Forest scenes were filmed in Chico’s Bidwell park - and would break from the movie to show the park locations of various scenes, such as where Robin fought Friar Tuck, or where all the men jumped out of the giant oak tree, etc.
    Also varied shots of the stars relaxing, talking and so forth. Also showed a citation issued to Errol Flynn for shooting a pheasant out of season while he was there. Great stuff, and please don’t get me started again - sorry.
    PS: Forgot to mention - Hollywood didn’t think the trees were green enough, so had the leaves on all the trees in the film painted green - true story.

    Ushindi, we SO need to hang out more. Movie trivia is a hobby of mine. We went to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, here in Orlando, and took the “Classical Movie tour. I knew more than the tour guide did.

    James Cagney was originally slated to play Robin Hood, but for whatever reason he got pissed off and walked off the set. The producer cast Flynn in a split second decision which ticked of Warner Bros.’ execs. It turned out to be the most lucrative film in Warner Bros. history until that point.

    And as a side literary note, Maid Marion is never mentioned in any of the original Robin Hood legends. Many theorize that the correlation came from a French romantic ballad “Jeau Robin et Marian” (Play of Robin and Marian). The “Robin” in this ballad is not Robin Hood but a shepherd, and Marian was a shepherdess whom he loved. Somewhere along the line, the two Robin stories collided in someone’s mind, and the rest is literary and cinematic history.

    The nicer restaurants have ketchup bottles that you just pour from. I can’t think of any that have this plastic doohicky you have to squeeze. Most of the fast food joints have the pump thing you fill a little paper container with for ketchup. I hate the pouches, I have to rip them open with my teeth and I use a lot of ketchup on my fries so I need about 6 of them.

    Stupid Jon, get up, go to the counter and ask them to refill the ketchup container!

    Yeah, Cagney as Robin Hood was the original plan - as I said once before in another comment, “Prince John, ya dirty rat!”. You know, though, the studio would HAVE to have a Maid Marian for Errol. And Gary Cooper was wanted for Rhett Butler, but he said Gone with the Wind would be the biggest flop in Hollywood history and turned it down - Gable didn’t really want to do it either, but was sort of pushed into it.
    BTW, The 1951 Red Badge of Courage with Audie Murphy? The forest scenes were also filmed in Chico’s Bidwell park.

    W.C. Fields turned down the role of the Wizard in The Wizard of Oz.

    Cary Grant was tapped to be the original James Bond.

    Bette Davis turned down the Scarlett O’Hara role in Gone With the Wind.

    Daryl Hannah, not Julia Roberts, was supposed to be Richard Gere’s Pretty Woman.

    Al Pacino, Nick Nolte, Christopher Walken and Burt Reynolds turned down the role of Han Solo in Star Wars. (Imagine if Harrison Ford had not gotten that role. Would there have been an Indiana Jones?)

    And even though George Raft wanted the role of Rick in Casablanca, Hal Wallis, the producer, said there was never any question that the part belonged to Humphrey Bogart.

    i have the DVD’s of Robin Hood, Captain Blood, and The Sea Hawk. A lot of what Ushindi states is noted in the extra features to Robin Hood. I found the extras on the 3 films to be almost as much fun as the films themselves. i always loved the old swashbucklers, but i loved Danny Kaye’s send-up The Court Jester even more. thanks for sparking the memories.
