    The bird is merely objecting to condescending, speciesist language.

    Meanwhile, it’s quite telling to see that even in 1856, the folks who hated Democratic candidates for president had no qualms about calling for their assassination.

    Cardinals! You’ve got to love them! (Especially if they were the mascot of your school and its teams!). They do have attitude, however.

    @Flight Suit

    Campaigns, for any office, in the 19th and early 20th centuries tended to be rather violent in ways most people couldn’t comprehend today. (Hey, I was a polisci major.)

    The girl in the foreground in the cigar factory picture is rather striking. It’s the combination of her smile, her eyes,the tendrils of her hair. I think I’m in love.

    Last comment: I keep wondering if Teresa was an art major. I am just continually astounded by the art works she posts. I keep a separate list of artists I want to look up, and it is a long list.

    The rather flat turtle on the blog is called a softshell or sometimes the pancake turtle. They’re found in Africa, Asia, North America, and Southeast Asia. Being edible, humans being what they are, almost ate them to extinction and so began turtle-culture (?). What would you do without your turtle stewed with almonds, roast with chili sauce?
