"Frog Applause reminds one of learning to read, in the sense that each word in the captions seems 'surprising' and new. Teresa's writing takes one back to that fresh state of mind (typical of, but of course not limited to, childhood) in which the brain, free of preconceptions, doesn't 'fill in' any blind spots along the way but rather wholly embraces the present moment as it unfolds. Every sentence is literally an imagination-expanding adventure." — Craig Conley, author of One-Letter Words: A Dictionary (HarperCollins)

It’s National Cartoonist’s Day, and Teresa’s birthday! Coincidence? I think not…

In honor of National Cartoonist’s day, there is a parade being held on the main drag of downtown Kansas City, Mo. The crowds are lining both sides of the street, and merriment is the word of the day. I see that The Phantom and Diana and the twins are in attendance, along with Prince Valiant and the beautiful Aleta. Wait a minute, if both of them are here, who’s minding the Kingdom? I hope that they haven’t left the Weed Men in charge. If so, they’d best take the first flight back to Camelot.
The parade is starting! The first float features Danae and Lucy of ‘Non Sequitur’. They had to put this float first because it just doesn’t follow.
The next float is in honor of ‘Peanuts’, and features Lucy pulling the football away just as Charlie Brown is about to kick it.
Coming around the corner now is a stunning float. I have never seen so many Snoopy stuffed plush toys in my life. It’s like one of those rose parade floats, except instead of being covered in flowers, it’s covered in stuffies. Snoopy himself is onboard and throwing stuffed replicas of himself to the kids in the crowd.
The next float is Garfield, and oh my, this was bad planning. It’s nearly the same theme as the Snoopy float. The children are going wild chasing after all these toys. Some of them can’t seem to figure out if they want a Snoopy or a Garfield. Garfield seems to be trying to get Snoopy’s attention. What is that he’s holding? It’s a picture of Snoopy’s next door neighbor cat. Ooh this could get ugly folks, it’s like a battle of the merchandising Titans of the comic world..
Oh, and look - here comes HRH Queen Victoria in an exquisite gold chased phaeton carriage suspended from the RAF Dirigible ‘Excelsior’. My, but Vicky sure knows how to make an entrance! And not only that, we are told that footmen on either side of the carriage are throwing what appears to be commemorative shillings to the common folk along the parade route. I think she’s angling to be next year’s parade queen!
Next comes two large balloons in the shape of the couple from ‘Love Is’. They certainly are pink. Behind them comes the’ Lio’ balloon, a perfect replica, it even has his pointed hair. Oh no, a gust of wind has come up, and is blowing the ‘Lio’ balloon way too close to the ‘Love Is’ balloons in front of it. BOOM!!!!! Oh no, the ‘Love Is’ balloons were punctured by ‘Lio’s’ hair, and have exploded! Oh, the humanity…. hm-mm, for some reason, the crowd is clapping and cheering. Well, never mind that, because next up is the marching band from Funky Winkerbean. Man those kids can play. Look, did you see that? All of a sudden everyone is ten years older. Some of those uniforms aren’t fitting too well now are they? Age isn’t as kind to some people as it is to others, is it?
Here’s the entry from Family Circus. To no ones surprise, it’s boring.
Oh look, it’s a float featuring Alice and Petey! There’s Dill and Viola, too. I see they even put Dad’s clown car on it. Wait a minute, it’s turning off of the parade route and heading into a ‘Cul-de-Sac’!
Is that Al Fusco walking by himself? What is he doing? It looks like he’s giving out his phone number to the women in the crowd. How can any man take that kind of rejection? Oh snap! He got slapped! That had to hurt.
I’ve been hearing about this entry from Get Fuzzy for a while now. Look at that! Even in broad daylight it shines like a second sun. There must be a million lights on it. Bucky says it’s an environmental statement, powered 100% by monkey batteries.
And next, on what appears to be the shortest float in the parade, is the King of Id accompanied by the wizard. The crowds appear to be booing the king, and throwing bottles, cans, and anything else they can scrounge up at him, while the wizard is keeping up a constant “frammin on the jimjam” turning the trash into a shower of flower blossoms. Now that’s recycling!
There’s a new entry this year by a conglomerate of characters from various strips. There are Squirrels from Rose is Rose, Dog Eat Doug, Mutts, and the OTC at Pibgorn. There are also Chipmunks from Barkeater Lake, and Mice from Garfield and Overboard. They are calling themselves the Rodent revolution. I don’t know what that’s about folks, but it sounds ominous.
Here comes the Queen of the Cartoonist’s Day Parade, Grace the Face, the star of “Frog Applause’ riding on a magnificent float, attended by the Elderly Lady, and the Long Legged Girl, who are throwing Crunchy Frog candies to the cheering crowd. There’s a man in the crowd holding up a sign as the float passes by that says: “You call this a cartoon?” I guess you can’t please everyone.
Suddenly a familiar figure darts into the street from behind a tree. It’s the Naked Man! The crowd gasps! He’s quickly tackled and thrown to the ground by a fast moving Tank McNamara, who sits on him while waiting for Offisa Pup to show up and take him to jail. It looks like he won’t be troubling anyone for quite some time.
Happy Birthday, Teresa! We hope you enjoyed your parade.

Happy Birthday TD!
And in honor of your BD, here is my Ode to Frog Applause:
What is the sound of frog applause?
Is it that voice that tells us to flout the laws
of convention & propriety?
If we look inside us, would we see
an echo of warm and familiar flaws?
Yes, that is the sound of frog applause.

Frogs are croaking upon the pond.
But they stop when I draw near.
I sneak up on these big old toads
and see they’re drinking beer.
It’s not a croak but a toast
I hear as each lift’s their stein.
“To Teresa,” I hear them say
“for she’s a friend of mine.”
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TERESA!!!
