"Frog Applause reminds one of learning to read, in the sense that each word in the captions seems 'surprising' and new. Teresa's writing takes one back to that fresh state of mind (typical of, but of course not limited to, childhood) in which the brain, free of preconceptions, doesn't 'fill in' any blind spots along the way but rather wholly embraces the present moment as it unfolds. Every sentence is literally an imagination-expanding adventure." — Craig Conley, author of One-Letter Words: A Dictionary (HarperCollins)

Your principal must have had a really old, and possibly blank, dictionary.

I can see this happening in real life. He should have used a French dictionary.

He should have just looked up the word “fashion”.

My father was the principal of my high school, I never got sent home. Though I never tried wearing culottes :-)
sloop said, about 1 year ago
I was once sent home for wearing culottes. With jodhpurs.

Wait…so the dictionary was “sans-culottes”?
UltraLameFest said, about 1 year ago
In fact, culottes is not in my Webster’s school dictionary, c1964. A lucky excuse for a principal attempting to avoid total chaos.

I think it’s great that you still have your old school dictionary. Was it yours to begin with or did you “borrow” it from your school?

I’m surprised that her poodle isn’t wearing dog culottes.

What is about this eccentric comic strip that attracts so many commentaries?

The comic is a spring board for wit and imagination.
Besides, we love Teresa.

Yeah she’s all right & also smart cause she must be married to a Persian LOL cuz she has a Persian last name. Although I doubt she’s Persian herself, but she could be, What’s ironic is our school principal in Iran was Ms Dowlatshahi.

From now on – and so that no one will feel left out! – I will only make comments in English on Frog Applause. My other cartoon, “Shoecabbage”, is devoted to other languages, in particular lesser known and endangered languages. http://www.gocomics.com/shoecabbage/

My granddaughters were aghast when I told them that girls in my town first got the ‘right’ to wear pants to school when I was a senior in high school. In earlier years you COULD wear pants to school, under your skirt, if it was below zero (!), but you had to take the pants off when you got there.
Also, kudos to Fortran for the great joke!

painedsmile: they made us buy them, and I never threw it out. Hey, it still works, except for culottes.

Fashion advice from a pharaoh (starring Yul Brinner as the principal):So let it not be written, so let it not be worn!
