Throttle his connection and see if he’s more conversational.

It’s nothing personal but boys don’t want to talk to their Moms’ much after the age of 10. They generally don’t have anything in common with them.

Strange new world to those of us who grew up in a world without technology … and it wasn’t even so long ago!

    That’s a generalization and a stereotype.
Some boys are taught by parents and family from day 1 that it’s a required part of their responsibilities as part of the family to communicate.
Some boys, the non communicators, are allowed to behave selfishly or to trivialize their family in order to behave like their peers or their view of their peers enforced by public media.
Turn off the power and say “You WILL spend 10 minutes in real communication with your family each day” is a good place to start.
It doesn’t require an hour nor any serious loss of study time. Just 10 minutes “required communication” and additional minutes will be added if you communicate uncivilly.
(Yes, I have used this method, yes it works. Yes it saves a ton of family grief later.)

Take away all of his devices for a day, then 2 days, then 3, etc. He is to never be offline with family and he gets to see what REALLY being offiline is.
