When I read ROOTS, i would read it in free time here and there. SInce I was busy, and it was such a long book, it took a while. I had been doing it for so long, I was used to having the book with me, and thus something to do. So when I finished, I was ‘what do I do now?’

Half a shelf full of unread books waiting for me, I’ve been avoiding the thrift stores and garage sales or else it would be 2 or 3 shelves

Instead of watching a lot of bad tv, I read a book. I can read about 3 in a week, sometime more. So many books, so little time…..

I used to read a little bit every night to my kids before bedtime. At one point i read them The Hobbit. They loved it, so we took a deep breath and started the whole LOTR trilogy. It took about 2 years at our pace. When we finished, I couldn’t read anything else to them for at least a month – it was just impossible to think of reading anything else after that.

I read the great actor Christopher Lee reads the LOTR trilogy once a year; as a tribute to J.R.R. Tokien’s creative genius. After reading the Hobbit, I read the trilogy in one month! I just couldn’t put it down, plus I was out on compensation from job. Win…win situation….

There are other good books, not to everyone’s flavor or taste but if you like it then it is super.

I’ve got the same problem… with my last position in the evening, I had lots of free time between calls in which to read so I got a few dozen books from a favorite author to read. Ironically, shortly afterward, I got a promotion that had day hours and a busier schedule so I didn’t have the time to read them. It’s been 5 years since then and I’ve slowly worked my way through 6 or 7 of those books. LOL!

Try reading “The African,” a 1967 novel by Hal Courlander.

It’s the book that ahem inspired “Roots.”

No fear Nate. Young people’s books are mainly about dragons, vampires and all forms of fantasy. Hey whatever gets them to read.

I can still remember the first time I got so enthralled by a book that I was lost when it ended. He’ll get over it once he finds the next good one – he may just need to take a day to ‘digest’ it beforehand ;-)
