   Actually, modern Halloween is a result of the Catholic church deciding to co-opt an ancient Celtic harvest festival called Samhain. Samhain comes at the end of October. People would choose which livestock to slaughter for winter at that time (cold enough for meat to keep well, fewer animals to feed through winter) and then have a good feast. They also honoured the dead at that time. The Church put All Saints Day (or All Hallows), a holiday honouring the saints (who were, of course, dead—many gruesomely), on November 1, the day after Samhain, which then became known as All Hallows Eve.
   Ergo, children dressing as ghosts and goblins and asking for goodies.

   But they know they have to put something in its place which are things like “Fall Festivals” to draw the kids and parents away. The Catholic Church did the same thing centuries ago.

    Everything swipes from everything because everything is connected. In Canada, Halloween is fireworks time because it is close to Guy Falkes Day which isn’t celebrated.
