I said that to myself independent of E. Leonard. It is a good day when I learn at least one thing new. I don’t limit myself. Neither should Caufield who is becoming intellectually lazy.

He’s on his own, not school-time, he can learn all he wants without external pressure.

“Learn something” was my standard line dropping my son off at school in the mornings

Ideally the something he learned was something they were actually trying to teach him at school, but life itself presents a great number of learning opportunities

Aahh, tubing down the Au Sable river! Some friends invited us along with a large group of their friends once, what a great day! First time I ever tasted ouzo.
One thing I didn’t consider initially – in a group situation like that, it’s preferable to be at the head of the line.
    What a lovely image!!!

Oh, I learn something new every day, but if it didn’t hurt me, I forget it by the next morning.

I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught.

I say the same thing, but reversed: not as a command but a thanks and a blessing: " Every day I learn something new. "

I do learn something every day. Unfortunately, it’s always from the news, so it’s seldom pleasant and never useful.

Sunday Panel: the boys drifting along on under a partly cloudy sky.
Caulfield: Elmore Leonard advised never to open a story with the weather.
    Frazz: “uh-oh.”

I tried to read Elmore Leonard once. The dialogue was too much like the drunken factory workers who inhabited my neighborhood when I was growing up.

“… he can learn all he wants without external pressure.”

That may depend on the library in his area and what the atmosphere of the library is. In my neck of the woods the library was a jobs program for women with powerful same-gender attractions. What does this mean in real terms? It means a library full of feminist literature and an unwelcoming attitude from the librarians towards males sitting there reading.

“I am always ready to learn although I do not always like being taught.
    Winston Churchill "

Winston Churchill may have thought my public school to be ideal. Our teachers didn’t believe in teaching. The students in my public school remained ready to learn, waiting for teaching to materialize from the teachers languidly sauntering in front of us and leaning against the chalk board. But the only advice they had was, “College is not for everyone.” Another nugget of wisdom: “Not everyone is college material.” They never had much else to offer after that.

Not all of us are cut out for school. I prefer to learn on my own as I want. Doesn’t look good on a resumé though.

I tell my students I discovered a dandy way to cheat in college — I read the whole text, not just the assigned chapters, and did ALL of the review questions and knowledge checks, not just the ones assigned. I figured I probably learned 20-30% more than my classmates — at no extra charge!
