We were staying in a cabin and I stepped on a scorpion. I don’t recall the pain, I do recall hopping up and down crying.
I am not much for camping though I do love the forest.

Freddog and I are backpacking this week in the high sierra. Love the solitude of the wilderness at night after being terrified of it in my much younger years (I’m 66). He’s not big on sleeping in a tent but I don’t want him chasing bears or marmots!

I’ve done my time camping. These days “roughing it” involves bad cable in the hotel room. ;)

Poison ivy and leeches on the same day. After that, forget camping, period.

Never caught poison ivy while camping. I hope the bears who raided my food did.

My childhood memory of my family camping out, was of staying in a tent while it poured the whole week.
We never went camping again after that.

Oh, I am SO envious! I love being away from the city and seeing all the stars. Hiking is the best – I go crazy over all the woodsy, outdoor smells. You and Freddog have a marvelous time!

This whole “what I will do this summer” series of comics has gone on so far that my kids actually started back in school today.

We tried a nice hotel once. The kids were bored in less than an hour. I’ll take a week camping in the great outdoors over a resort hotel any day.

I would have loved to have gone camping. But when my dad had his vacay he stayed home the entire time getting screamed at by my mother. From morning till night every day he would lie in his bed with a pillow over his face, waiting for my mother to calm down. As the time progressed she would get more nervous and would scream louder and more frequently. She just didn’t want him in the house. For my dad it was a contest of wills. It was his house. He was replaying the drama of his childhood when his mother couldn’t stand him. His mother had the power to kick him out, but his wife didn’t.

You all need to try better places to camp. The Rocky Mountains, for instance, where biting and sucking creatures are few and far between, and poison ivy is rare. The days are sunny but not hot, with low humidity. It is a pleasure to be outdoors in the right location.

My summers were already spent camping in a way. I would walk in the woods around our house. The problem is there was no wildlife and sewers would leak into the creeks. It would have been great to experience the outdoors in a clean environment with animals to see and fish to catch.
