Change it to Robert Crais, Carl Hiaasen or Christoper Moore, and I’m there……

I am a big fan of dropping at least one of many “holidays” and allowing people to take their birthday of (the following Monday if it falls on a weekend). This way you get your own day and the point of getting a PC Holiday just to go shopping was always dumb, not to mention not everyone is off of work at the same time.

I worked for a clinical laboratory back in the early 1990s which did give employees their birthdays off as a paid holiday!

    “Happy Birthanniversary to youuuuu.
    Happy Birthanniversary to youuuuuu….”

Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it. Eh?

Actually, one of my employers did that. We had a list of holidays— and our birthday. They had their motive. Didn’t make much diff to salaried people. But this was a 24/7 operation; and covering for unionized wage roll people was much less expensive.

I agree with your dad, except it’s actually a birth date. (i.e. we celebrate on, say, the 12th, not on say, Tuesday)

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you’re older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

I’m not real crazy about the name-dropping. And the self-congratulation is as irritating as ever. But I really like the message, tinged with narcissism as it may be: Simple pleasures are awesome and it’s awesome that a guy can do what he loves every day.

Birthdays are a lot more awesome when you’re only Caulfield’s age.

I like that distinction. One could celebrate one’s birthday every week!

If I’m the only one who notes a little self-interest there, then I must be the only one paying attention.

I do have to give Mr. Mallett credit for his good taste. If you’re gonna boost your own bona fides by name-dropping, you could do worse than Snider and Jacobs. Interesting, though, how one title from Jacobs’s work stands out, in a “Frazz” context: “The Know-It-All”.
