Sadly, this is the state of the education system in both our countries.

I really don’t understand why we don’t have a small base on the moon…A little gravity is a good thing…..The moon is one big satellite….So much could be done and learned there….

Varnes – so you believe we should be mooned?

And if we were a lot younger there would have been tons more applicants.

Well, it is little gravity but it would be a lot of money!

No one wants to go to the Moon anymore unless it has satellite TV.

Uh… what grade are we talking about here? I wouldn’t necessarily expect a kid of this age to have learned enough math to understand the difference between home-to-Grandma’s and earth-to-Mars.

On the other hand, the number of adults who think space ships “fly” like WWII fighter planes and make a “woosh” as they go by… not so much the educational system, but Hollywood (which sometimes seems like it is our real educational system).

It’s less expensive to set up a one way trip to mars and resupply them for a lifetime, rather than bring them back.

If we were a lot younger we’d be sitting on the couch playing video games…..

How soon between establishing structures on the moon and a meme photo of an astronaut sending pressed ham toward the earth?

It’s doubtful this country, or any in the Western world, will even return to the Moon, let alone build a base. There is too much risk with little return for the private sector (no market for it yet) and governments cannot justify it to a populace who not only doesn’t care, but are demanding more and more entitlements. Things would have to change pretty dramtically for it to happen, even in our grandchildren’s lifetime.

The money is already being spent on robotic exploration missions to prepare extraterrestrial bodies for human occupation. My neighbor JPL is working on missions for both landing on the moon and on astroids.

They are working on portable modules and have built a prototype multipurpose rover/robot that can carry and place the modules and and support stations, supply depots, and vehicles on Mars.
