    Is that to say he had math homework every night this week and he spent an average of five minutes on it each night? I wonder how often kids that age are given math homework … ?

    @bigpuma

    I had math homework by first grade. Why not?

    My daughter has had nightly math homework since first grade.

    Don’t see how you get that…. he said he spent 20 minutes trying to understand his math homework. I have had nights like that, even back in grade school and we had math homework often.

    Thanks for the reply. Makes the joke funnier, that he spent only five minutes a night on it. By my way of thinking, anyway.

    You like to throw brickbats even when all I’m doing is asking a simple question. Caulfield is asking about this week’s homework. Not last night’s homework.

    I considered that possibility. It could also be that he was given only one math assignment for the week. But isn’t the gag supposed to be that he spent very little time on it? The less time he spends on it, the more sense it makes.

    “I spent an hour on this material and I didn’t absorb any of it!”
    “You spent a whole hour reading and didn’t learn anything?”
    “…well, what I should say is ‘I spent an hour asleep on the textbook’.”
    “Ah. So the soggy pages… drool?”
    “Yeah. Turns out the material absorbed me just fine.”
