Great guy? Come on, he was close enough to catch her and yet he preferred to let her fall and make a joke of it!

Well, if you wanna get that technical with the physics and timing, how is it that Frazz can recognize the event, think of a fun thing to say, make the “safe” sign and say what he says all in LESS than .5 seconds? After all, he’s doing all that before all of the contents of the bag have reached the floor, and gravity has the same effect on them as on the girl.

Time for more physics. Frazz could in fact move his arms downward faster than gravity because his muscles pushed down against the mass of his body as a whole.
This would make his torso move downward slower than gravity, but that would still allow him to make the catch.
    .
HOWEVER, this is a COMIC STRIP, and as Wile E. Coyote can attest, physics never gets in the way of comedy.

Pure thought is much faster than physical movement, spreading his arms takes much less effort than trying for a saving catch. And, of course, this is a cartoon world. Which is why we all come back to watch. :-D

A large number of my thoughts are impure (or so the nuns have told me). Those pop up even faster than pure ones. No comment on any kind of associated physical movements.

It would have been unbelievable to even have a physics class at the high school I went to.
