They were once called Humbugs. That’s where the phrase ‘Humbug" came from. Nothing but a humbug was a phrase originally meant to assure someone that it wasn’t a bee or a wasp, it eventually came to mean, “nothing of consequence..” Thus, Uncle Scrooge said “Humbug!”….
