Frazz by Jef Mallett follows the adventures of an unexpected role model: an elementary-school janitor who's also a Renaissance man. While he's sweeping the hall, he's whistling Beethoven. Or Lyle Lovett. He paints the woodwork in the classrooms; he paints a Da Vinci on the cafeteria wall. He's a trusted authority figure who is every kid's buddy. He took the janitor's job while he was a struggling songwriter, and when he finally sold a hit song, he decided to stay on at school. Frazz appears in 200 newspapers worldwide, including the Los Angeles Times, Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune and Detroit News. "A few years back, I wrote and illustrated a children's book," says Mallett. "When I was traveling around reading it at school assemblies, I noticed that often, the most respected, best-liked grown-up in the building was the janitor. And I thought, 'Hmm, there's a comic strip in that.'" Often praised for its intelligent wit, gentle spirit and effortless diversity, Frazz won a Wilbur Award from the Religion Communicators Council in 2003 and 2005 for excellence in communicating values and ethics.

Yep…and that’s because they make ’em out of rubber. Thank goodness!

I’ve often said, the reason we don’t have the energy of a 5 year old anymore is because we would break when we fell down. They hardly even notice they fell.

Seems to me they’re more likely to cry when they fall.

In some cases they only cry if they know someone is watching.

It’s funny. Cuts, bruises, dislocated shoulders, sprained ankles… I still heal from those as quickly as ever. But I whacked my knee on a footstool six years ago and it still bothers me!
I knew I should’ve taken out the extended warranty when I got this body.

I dunno… I work in a high school and see lots of kids with braces and crutches and the like, mostly thanks to sports injuries that have been surgically repaired. Torn ACLs are very popular these days. And while they’ve been quickly repaired by surgery, you gotta wonder if long-term, this kind of damage is cumulative and is going to make their lives a lot more difficult and expensive when they’re my age (pushing 60 with a bulldozer).

When we’re kids we don’t live for the person we’ll be when we’re 60. Nor should we. Ever. (pushing 72 – got bulldozed by 60 long ago).

Actually flexible cartilage. Got flexibility we lose with bone replacement.

Puddleglum & Sully: You children quit fighting. I am in my countdown to 80.

Seeing crutches and braces maybe isn’t that bad, shows they’re getting better care. After all, kids will always be kids. Better than the “Walk it off!” we used to get.

Oh boy. That’s no good. Looks like things are getting worse. I went to school with guys who played a lot of football and the blows to the head did no good for their thought processes. They tended to panic when faced with tough stuff.

But as I always say …
Getting older beats the heck out of the alternative.
