Frazz by Jef Mallett follows the adventures of an unexpected role model: an elementary-school janitor who's also a Renaissance man. While he's sweeping the hall, he's whistling Beethoven. Or Lyle Lovett. He paints the woodwork in the classrooms; he paints a Da Vinci on the cafeteria wall. He's a trusted authority figure who is every kid's buddy. He took the janitor's job while he was a struggling songwriter, and when he finally sold a hit song, he decided to stay on at school. Frazz appears in 200 newspapers worldwide, including the Los Angeles Times, Seattle Times, Chicago Tribune and Detroit News. "A few years back, I wrote and illustrated a children's book," says Mallett. "When I was traveling around reading it at school assemblies, I noticed that often, the most respected, best-liked grown-up in the building was the janitor. And I thought, 'Hmm, there's a comic strip in that.'" Often praised for its intelligent wit, gentle spirit and effortless diversity, Frazz won a Wilbur Award from the Religion Communicators Council in 2003 and 2005 for excellence in communicating values and ethics.

Notice who’s wearing shorts, and who’s NOT!

Wearing shorts when it’s 30 degrees out is just plain silly. It’s 30 here this morning. I don’t generate enough heat to not be cold when it’s 30, while running.

Whoa! You can tell this is Michigan! The grey is getting to all of us! Me, I’m turning all the lights on and closing all the drapes!

Might as well move to Alaska. They’ve got free nursing homes up there.

The climate in most of Africa selects for ability to radiate heat, not conserve it: long limbs and trunk to maximize surface area, body fat concentrated in the butt and hips. African-American GIs suffered way disproportionately from frostbite during the Korean War.

I HATE cold weather running. Never used to but as I’ve aged the more I hate being cold. Used to run all year round. I need to move to a warmer climate. I am as serious a heart attack when I tell people if I never saw it get below 60 degrees, or if I never saw another snowflake the rest of my life I’d be thrilled!

You could always move to Arizona. Today’s our coldest day this year and it’s sunny, and a slightly chilly 63 degrees By Tuesday it’ll be back in the mid 70’s. We have A/C for the heat in the summer, and 2/3’s of the state are over 4500 ft.

zedman2222: I thought grey was a kind of cup. The zed part of your nom de web should also have been a giveaway.

I know this is supposed to show how dedicated Plainwell is, but doesn’t she come across mainly as didactic? The dismissiveness? The moralizing? Just my opinion, but she’d be easier to take if she were to sound a note of encouragement instead of acting like Burke’s opinion counts for nothing. No one likes to have his feelings invalidated. Least of all when expressing something like vulnerability.

Indoor temps this year 68-82, no heating, no a/c and no wind except the afternoon ocean breeze. On those chilly winter mornings you can choose between swimming in the 75 degree water or having another cup of the best coffee ever. Dang I feel good.

Well, if he would just start running he would warm up.
